When legendary musician David Byrne was approached about using some of his music in a high school color guard routine, he began to look into the tradition. A hybrid of marching band, cheerleading and rhythmic gymnastics, with added spinning flags, color guard is a unique tradition practiced at schools across the USA and Canada. Hooked on this mesmerising show, Byrne decided to pair 10 notable musicians with 10 high schools to create all new pieces of work. Contemporary Color captures this one-off show in all its glory, and features new works by St Vincent, Ad-Rock, Nelly Furtado, Devonté Hynes, Byrne himself and more.
There’s no doubting that Byrne — and, by extension, the Ross brothers — have delivered an entirely original blend of psychedelic experiences with a realistic window into American life.
