Did Orwell get it right, or is Big Brother bigger and more invasive now than ever envisaged?
The Snowden revelations in 2013 demonstrated the sheer scale of governmental surveillance, enabling intelligence agencies to access private data around the world in the name of national security. Here in the UK the Investigatory Powers Bill, currently racing through parliament, is the most audacious attempt yet seen in any modern democracy to expand surveillance powers.
So where does this leave privacy and our civil liberties?
Find out more at the Centre for Contemporary Arts with an exclusive screening of The Haystack a documentary that tells us what we need to know about the IP Bill and demonstrates the dangers of suspicionless surveillance. This remarkable documentary features ex-GCHQ director, Sir David Omand, ex NSA analyst and whistleblower, Bill Binney, Privacy International and Big Brother Watch to provide a balanced and succinct investigation of surveillance use and effectiveness.
Following the screening there will be a Q&A session with:
Joanna Cherry QC MP – SNP MP for Edinburgh South West and the SNP Spokesperson on Justice and Home Affairs. Joanna Cherry has been a vocal opponent of the IP Bill and demonstrated with striking accuracy and understanding the dangers of unfettered bulk data collection and suspicionless surveillance.
Olivia Cappuccini – The Founder of Scenes of Reason and the producer / director of The Haystack. She will be joining the Q&A from London via Skype.
David Irvine – CEO/Chairman of MaidSafe, an innovative tech company from Troon that aims to provide security and privacy for everyone. David have led the way in developing secure networks around the world with privacy at their core.
Professor Lilian Edwards – Professor of E-Governance at the University of Strathclyde and a leading academic in the field of Internet law. Her current research interests include online privacy, cybercrime, intermediary liability, Internet pornography, digital assets and digital copyright enforcement.
Please join us to find out more about the IP Bill and what it means to our everyday lives, civil liberties and the technological communities across the country.
