Part of the Refugee Festival Scotland and final film in the ‘African Hopes, Beats and Dreams’ series, Hope is a tender and desperate story of two African refugees discovering solidarity and love. A young man from Cameroon and a Nigerian woman find themselves in the harsh landscape of the Sahara desert along with hundreds of others making the desperate and dangerous journey across Northern Africa. Although their journeys are the same, the gangs, culture, racism and nationalistic structures that have been emplaced along this well-worn migratory path, means that the safety of both man and woman requires staying with one’s own people. However, these two try to find their way together and to love each other—telling what is both an incredibly beautiful and ugly story, Hope vigorously portrays the very much current and heartbreaking issue of African migrants in search of something better in Europe.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with representatives from the Scottish Refugee Council about refugees in Scotland.
