Running time: 3h16m
Stanley Kubrick’s original ‘sword and sandals’ epic tells the legendary tale of the titular slave, played with charismatic intensity by Kirk Douglas. Born a Thracian slave, Spartacus rose up to become the leader of a violent rebellion against the decadent Romans who oppressed him and his people. Hailed as the first intellectual epic upon its release, Spartacus still stands up today thanks to Dalton Trumbo’s magnificent screenplay, Stanley Kubrick’s direction and an all-star cast including Douglas, Laurence Olivier and Jean Simmons.
