CCA presents an evening of film screenings and a Q&A by American artist, filmmaker and social worker Joey Huertas – aka Jane Public. The screening will include I Loving Me (1994); I Really Think It’s a Black and White Incident (2003); The Healing Power of Violence (2004); 330.20 (2006) and In the Upper Room (2008).

Active since the early 1990s, Huertas has divided his time between social work in psychiatric hospitals and prison systems, and his practice as a filmmaker. The complex cinematic research that Huertas deploys extracts – at first sight – a general violent layer exposing the state of American society. However, the imaginative documents in the film-making connect violence to notions of race, gender, a health economy and legal realities. Using re-enactments, obscurity and sound sources within many of his films, the stories depicted are personal mirrors of broader social actions, constantly shifting between private and public concerns.

The background upon which Huertas’ works take place can be described as ‘clinical fiction’, approximating unknown images and an understanding of mental health, penal environments and the potential of offering creative ‘confessions’ by both ‘patient’ and ‘doctor’, and distorting equality between protagonists within the stories that unfold.

In preparation for an exhibition in 2017 at CCA in which the state of America is of concern, Joey Huertas is producing a new film called The Bromley Contingent. Commissioned by CCA, this new film is a mix of documentary research on capital punishment and a surreal story about a corrupt family court lawyer fighting his own personal trial of conscience. The Bromley Contingent explores telekinesis, mind control and features a punk rock soundtrack derivative of 1970s era East London. The film will be shot on location in Bromley, London and The Bronx, NYC. The film will use Super 8mm film and digital HD photography.
