Friday 21–Thursday 27 August, 2015
A sharp, absorbing and gutsy satire from Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf, The President focuses on an ageing dictator in an unnamed country, known only as The President. When a coup rips away his entitlement, he is left with his adored grandson, whose parents were killed in the revolution. Living out their days in fear of the newly disloyal military, the two find disguises and hide themselves as an impoverished street musician and his dancing monkey boy. A striking and bold film that moves at a surprising pace as it recounts a modern fable on power and reconciliation.
