Premiered on the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, this short film by Glasgow-based artist Lin Li is a portrait of Brian Quail, a retired teacher who has been campaigning against nuclear weapons for decades and engages in non-violent direct actions. The film includes conversations between Brian and Lin that consider the meaning of his actions, what constitutes social peace, personal peace and faith. Extracts from these conversations are combined with footage filmed in Brian’s home, his intimate space which reveals his values, ideals and identity.
Whilst focusing on an individual and his peace activism, the film touches on topics which have wider significance, such as: the issue of nuclear disarmament; an individual citizen’s responsibility and ability to influence state policy; and the question of how we live and what we live for. On a different level, the film also poses questions of how we construct our identities and whether a person is a coherent unitary subject.
After the screening, there will be Q&A and discussion led by Luke Collins (LUX Scotland). This project is supported by Creative Scotland through the Open Project Funding.
