A subtle early classic from Guillermo del Toro, director of the acclaimed Pan’s Labyrinth, this Spanish thriller portrays the horrors of Civil War through the eyes of a terrified child. 10-year-old Carlos has been left in a remote orphanage while the war rages on across Spain, threatening to get closer every day. Bullied by his fellow orphans, he discovers that the orphanage is haunted by a murdered child.
The film will be introduced by Dr David Archibald (University of Glasgow), author of The War That Won’t Die: The Spanish Civil War in Cinema, which is newly available in paperback.
