New talent Jack O’Connell follows up his star-making role in this year’s Starred Up with this harrowing drama from first-time feature director Yann Demange, scripted by Black Watch writer Gregory Burke. O’Connell is quiet yet captivating as young English squaddie Gary Hook, who finds himself trapped alone in a hostile area of Belfast in the midst of one of the Northern Ireland Troubles’ worst years, in 1971. Fresh out of basic training, the film follows Hook’s nightmarish journey through the ravaged streets, through guerrilla outposts in an alien land. With Burke’s remarkable screenplay, this tight, taut and, at times, explosive period thriller furthers O’Connell’s status as the next big thing.
The screening on Mon 13 Oct (18.15) will be introduced by Dr Nessa Johnston, lecturer at Glasgow School of Art, as part of our Contemporary Cinema Course.
