A quiet and confident-cultural chamber piece, this debut by Cambodian director Hong Khaou is an affecting study of grief and loss, seen through the eyes of a mourning mother and a distraught lover. Pei-pei Cheng plays Junn, a Chinese-Cambodian mother attempting to overcome the passing of her son, who is at first exasperated by visitations from his former partner Richard, played with brooding charm by Ben Whishaw. Junn was unaware of her son’s sexuality, however Richard attempts to reach across the barriers of age and culture to connect with Junn and move past their devastating loss together.
