Whisky Galore! + whisky tasting

Filmed at Barra in the outer Hebrides, WHISKY GALORE! (U) is based upon a true incident, the foundering of a cargo ship off the Isle Of Eriskay with 50,000 cases of Scotch aboard. The Islanders delight in smuggling cases of their favourite tipple from the wrecked ship, while Basil Radford stars as the teetotal English official who is totally unable to comprehend the significance of whisky to the locals. The film is followed by a whisky tasting in The Lane Bar, led by Caledonian Cowboy himself, Johnny Gauld.

In 1996 American guitarist Ry Cooder gathered together some of the greatest names from the history of Cuban music to collaborate on the Grammy Award winning album” THE BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB.” This feature length documentary, inspired by the album, includes appearances by legendary performers Ry and Joaquim Cooder,Ibrahim Ferrer, Ruben Gonzalis, Eliades Ochoa, Omara Portuondo and Compay Segundo. It also chronicles the cooperation and camaraderie between Cooder and his veteran friends (now know in Cuba as”Los Superablos” the super grandfathers), as well as their dazzling sell out concert in Amsterdam and New York’s Carnegie hall in 1998. Director Wim (”WING OF DSIRE”) Wenders goes on to explain that ”he had no concept for the new film other that trying to do justice to this wonderful, warrm, miraculous yet altogether real music.”
