The King and I, King’s Theatre Glasgow
4th – 8th March, 2014
PMOS is delighted to bring the classic musical The King and I to the King’s Theatre.
The King and I, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein’s 1951 Broadway musical hit, was based on Margaret Landon’s book Anna and The King of Siam. It ran for 1,246 performances and won several Tony Awards one of which was for Best Musical. It also won another 4 Tony Awards in 1996, again one of which was for Best Musical. It features well known and loved musical numbers such as Whistle a Happy Tune, Getting to Know You, Shall We Dance, We Kissed in a Shadow, Hello Young Lovers and the hauntingly beautiful and emotive Something Wonderful.
Set in Siam (now Thailand) in 1862 the dramatic script examines the vast differences between Eastern and Western cultures. The story begins when British widow Anna Leonowens and her young son Louis arrive at the Royal Palace in Bangkok, having been summoned by the King to serve as tutor to his many wives and children. The King is largely considered to be a barbarian by those in the West but although initially aghast at the regime in the Royal Palace, Anna recognises that the King is a good man and agrees to work with him in changing his image; with both keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values. In time Anna and the King grow to understand and eventually, respect one another in what becomes a truly unique love story.
With a dazzling score, a wonderful ballet number The Small House of Uncle Thomas and featuring many local juveniles as the Royal Siamese children, The King and I is one of the all time greats of musical stage and promises to be a treat for all the family. Don’t miss it!
