Abseiling for the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

In the summer of 2009, things were moving along nicely until we discovered a walnut sized lump on the neck of our 5 year old pet cat, Bea. How could we not have noticed that? Did it appear overnight? What could grow so big, so fast? We knew it couldn’t be good…

When it was confirmed that she had a malignant tumour, we didn’t know if she would make it beyond two weeks. During that initial stressful period, I researched every little tidbit of information I could get my hands on to comfort myself that this was a common thing; easily cured; great survival rates. One of those sources of ‘information’ was internet discussion forum sites for feline cancer, and that was when I realized the profound role that small companion animals play in the lives of their owners. It was also clear that people contributed to these discussions just to offer words of support, and that most of the pets being discussed were rescue animals, just like mine.

It is now eighteen months since that initial shock, and following surgery and radiotherapy treatment. At a recent follow up scan our pet was given an all clear.  She’s not out of the woods yet, but I feel it is time to do something to ‘give back’ to mark the milestone.

I want to do something for rescue animals in particular and have decided to abseil the Forth Rail Bridge for my chosen charity which is the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

I am generally not keen on heights, and have a real fear of falling, so it’s a big challenge for me. You can read all about it on my justgiving page www.justgiving.com/David-Morrison58 and I’m hoping it will inspire like-minded people to dig into their pockets and give to my cause.

I start training next week (the start of April, 2013) by jumping off a small chair…wish me luck!
