“Murder, murder, polis, three stairs up!” An Evening in Taggart’s Glasgow

Taggart

Thursday October 29, 2026, 6.30 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Glasgow City Heritage Trust

At

The Mackintosh Tearooms, 217 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, G2 3EX

An evening exploring the world of Taggart with the man who started it all, Robert Love, Head of Drama at STV for twenty years, in conversation with public historian Fergus Sutherland, in the beautiful Mackintosh Tearooms.

First broadcast in 1983, Taggart ran for 27 years and 109 episodes, becoming the UK’s longest-running police drama. At its peak, it attracted audiences of more than 18 million and gained a cult following around the world.

Filmed on location throughout Glasgow, the programme captured a city in transition, recording its changing streets and skyline from the post-industrial landscape of the early 1980s to its emergence as a city of culture in the 1990s and beyond.

Robert and Fergus will explore the stories behind the programme, its enduring appeal and the Glasgow it captured on screen- as well as settling one crucial question: did Jim Taggart ever actually say, “There’s been a murder”?
