A Review

Pat Byrne, October, 2008.

Jim and I were invited along by his mum and dad, who are regulars at the music club, which not only provides high quality entertainment but aims to promote local talent. In addition to these up and coming musicians The Place regularly attracts some big names in the world of folk music.

Photo: laissez-faire. Among the acts that have performed at the music club are one of my favourite acts,The Poozies. Other big attractions from the world of folk music and beyond include: Dick Gaughan, Michael Marra, Archie Fisher, Prelude, The McCalmans, Swing Cats, Mike Whellans and Seylan Baxter & Cheyenne Brown.

However, I would return just to catch The Cross Border Band, made up of a multi-talented threesome - Erne, Mike Simons and Linsey Aitken. The band performs a wide range of contemporary and traditional songs, including many of Erne's own compositions. He is a man born to entertain and his sidekicks sparkle in their own right with some virtuoso finger-picking guitar from Mike and Linsey's mesmerising cello playing. The tunes are superb, the harmonies excellent and the three show off their comic talents to great advantage - verging into the realms of rather rioutous musical comedy.

Photo: jim byrne at the place. The programme offered by the other performers was very varied and we heard some lively American music performed by the duo, 'Laissez-faire'. Mary Stewart, clearly a local favourite, treated us to one of her own songs about beachcombing and mismatched Wellie boots - I loved it.

Jim also peformed a selection of his songs;'Annemarie' and 'Daddy's Car', two of his older folksy/country numbers, went down well also a new song 'The Handle's Broken on my Cup' proved particularly popular with the audience.

All in all a very enjoyable exercusion and I reckon we'll be heading back to The Place, first chance we get.
