My Interview with Helen Flaherty

Added on Sunday 30 Sep 2012

I was very privileged to be able to interview the wonderfully talented Helen Flaherty! She was kind enough to take some time to answer some question about the music she loves and intensely loves to play!!! Thank you so very much Helen!!
(Helen) How long have you been performing?
(Helen Flaherty) I've been performing seriously for about 14 years. I have always sung and as far back as I can remember I have liked music.
(Helen S) What got you into folk music, have you always had a love for it?
(Helen Flaherty) For me Scottish music is home. I love home. I love old melodies and words that have stood the test of time. I like to hear that in other cultures also and especially enjoy Irish music as having a connection with my past somewhere :o)
(Helen S) What are some challenges you have faced in music (performing or otherwise)?
(Helen Flaherty) The challenge to improve never goes away. The challenge of working with dodgy sound, onstage, not hearing the other musicians, is taxing because you don't feel like you are giving your best for the audience. The challenge that working with different personalities brings, in a positive way. Appearing fresh when you are dog tired.
(Helen S) Do you ever get nervous?
(Helen Flaherty) Absolutely. But good nervous.
(Helen S) What was it like when you first started out in music?
(Helen Flaherty) Like a whole new world opening up for me. I have been very lucky to work with more experienced talented musicians who were willing to share their music with me.
(Helen S) Who are some artist in music you look up and where do you get your inspiration from in music?
(Helen Flaherty) Dougie Maclean, Dick Gaughan, Dolores Keane. People that I think sing from the heart. I look for inspiration wherever I can find it.
(Helen S) Is there a big folk scene in Belgium?
(Helen Flaherty) Yes and it is varied in age and style.
(Helen S) Any new material or tours coming up you would like to mention or talk about?
(Helen Flaherty) Shantalla is touring again this winter in Belgium and Philip and Dave and I are halfway through a second CD, hoping to be finished early in 2010.
(Helen S) What have you been able to do that you wouldn't be able to do if you weren’t performing music?
(Helen Flaherty) Music has brought excellent people and experiences into my life. It is a gift that I really enjoy!!
(Helen S) Do you have a favorite place you have toured?
(Helen Flaherty) no, I enjoy touring and meeting new friends as well as catching up with old ones.
(Helen S) You recently got back from Ireland, how was it?
(Helen Flaherty) Good, fun. A mix of friends and music!
(Helen S) What are some accomplishments you feel you've achieved?
(Helen Flaherty) I am very proud of the music I have been part of and my growth as an artist over the years. I am very fortunate in having the help and advice of people more talented than I am. I am grateful to the doors music has opened for me. I am happy to be a part of something that I love.
(Helen S) Is there any stories or anything else you would like to share, the floor is yours?
(Helen Flaherty) I have no "if only" moments in my life. I make the most of whatever path I choose or whatever is thrown against me. I have met some wonderful people and have some wonderful memories.. Life is good.
Helen!
