Unkle Bob with Fireside Kicks

Friday 8th October, 8pm, £10

Unkle Bob release their much-anticipated second album on October 4th. Entitled Shockwaves, the album is the follow up to the critically lauded Sugar and Spite (released in 2006), a record that made the band something of a cult phenomenon in the US. Their songs have since sound-tracked countless US teen dramas (spawning well over 100,000 downloads in the process) whilst the song Swans featured in the climax to a Greys Anatomy storyline and inspired literally hundreds of college kids to make their own Swans videos.

Combining their love for traditional and folk music as well as original songs and tunes the Paul McKenna Band have been playing to audiences throughout the UK since 2006. With a contemporary approach to songs, although not straying too far from their roots, their arrangements are both fresh and innovative. Their exciting sound is created through outstanding vocals, driving Guitar and Bouzouki, intense Fiddle playing, a warm pairing of Flute and Whistles and dynamic Bodhran and percussion.

Sally Barker's Joni Mitchell project

Saturday 13th November, 8pm, £14

Sally Barker, of the all-women folk band The Poozies, delivers a captivating and poignant performance of the songs of the cool Canadian from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Sally is joined by Glenn Hughes on piano and dulcimer to perform songs from the CD 'Conversation: the Joni tapes, Vol 1', which was released at the Edinburgh Fringe in August. From the Satie-esque setting of `Blue' to the rockin' rumpus of `Raised on Robbery' these musicians take you on a dynamic journey through the heart and mind; California via Chelsea, Paris and Des Moines. Big Yellow Taxi anyone?

Previous years have seen Ben Sturrock and Rick Webster of Unkle Bob, who have recently toured with James and the Proclaimers. If you are an artist and would like to be considered for this show then please email myspace or weblink details to email or hand in a demo to the box office at the Concert Hall.

Carol Laula

Saturday 4th December, 8pm, £12

With "a style that draws from the sweet, clear delicacy of Joni Mitchell and the tougher edges of Joan Armatrading", she first captivated the media and her audience in 1990, when her independent single, "Standing Proud" was chosen to represent Glasgow in its year of culture. During the '90s, she toured Asia and Europe, collecting fans and souvenirs along the way, before appearing on stage in at New York's famous Carnegie Hall. The same decade saw Carol team up with the late Stuart Adamson to produce a series of songs and she has also collaborated with Jane Weidlin of the Go-Gos, Ryan Hedgecock of Lone Justice and Australia's Cheryl Beattie. With seven albums under her belt, she still stirs critics to describe her as "Scotland's leading singer-songwriter" and "an undeniably passionate and whole-hearted singer". "Laula's songs deal with strength in adversity - especially from the modern woman's perspective - on a personalised but universal level. (Q Magazine)
