access film club the quiet girl

11 – 14 July, 2022

Colm Bairéad’s debut feature is an intricately exquisite coming-of-age drama that delves into the many layers of family relations through the eyes of a young girl. The film follows Cáit (Catherine Clinch) as she is sent to live with distant relatives for the summer. She is welcomed with open arms by Eibhlín (Carrie Crowley), but her husband (Andrew Bennett) keeps Cáit at arms length. Slowly but surely a warmth grows within this makeshift family and Cáit reaps the benefits. Until, that is, she discovers more than she anticipated.

The Quiet Girl won eight categories at the 2022 Irish Film and Television Awards including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress, and won the Grand Prix of the Generation Kplus International Jury Award at the 2022 Berlin International Film Festival.

Why We Love It:

So much is said in looks, glances and silences in this film, whose young lead will tug at your heartstrings as she navigates her way from emotional neglect at home to a meaningful bond with the relatives who take her in for a summer. It’s a rich portrait of imperfect family life, and the reward that comes from loving as well as being loved.” Lindsay Clydesdale, Glasgow Film Marketing Manager
