OMG - The Art School!

Recommended Posts

Just got home and Jim told me about the fire. He passed it and said that nothing seemed to be happening very quickly to get the blaze under control. Total disaster. No replacing the damage in one of our finest old buildings and the students will be devastated about their work being destroyed. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-27541883

Very sad. It's a pity it hadn't been the new building – so much easier to replace. No replacing Mackintosh.

"firefighters had been liaising with university staff and were working to save "iconic items", as well as the fabric of the building." BBC Live News about half an hour ago.

The images are heartbreaking. Only good thing that can be said is that there are no casualties.

We love going along to the degree show. Won't be happening this year.

Heartbreaking news. I loved that building. I attended classes in it when I was a teenager. Fingers crossed that they don't decide to demolish it.

News is a bit brighter. "

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service crews are continuing work to fully extinguish the fire and save artworks.

The fire service said more than 90% of the structure was viable and they had protected up to 70% of the contents."

Good job.

Media Release from GSA:

Friday, 23 May 2014

Updated statement from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service on the Mackintosh Building

A MULTI AGENCY PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY SFRS.

Firefighters battling the blaze at the iconic Macintosh Building in Glasgow City Centre have prevented the destruction of both the structure and the majority of its contents.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service crews are continuing work to fully extinguish the fire and save artworks.

With the incident under control indications are the firefighters' efforts have ensured more than 90 per cent of the structure is viable and protected up to 70 per cent of the contents - including many students' work.

Assistant Chief Officer Dave Boyle, director of service delivery on the west, said: "Crews have been working absolutely flat out throughout this very challenging incident and it is clear their effort and skill has saved this treasured building and many of the items it housed.

"While the priority from the outset was to save life we have also been working closely with Glasgow School of Art staff to ensure firefighters conducted an effective salvage operation.

"We are of course very conscious the Macintosh is a world renowned building that is a key feature of this great city, and that the artworks it stores are not only valuable but also cherished.

"We are acutely aware this period is the culmination of years of endeavour for students and that their irreplaceable work is inside the Macintosh.

"Work to save everything that can be saved is ongoing and we will continue to work closely with GSA staff and students throughout this operation."

A spokesperson for Glasgow School of Art added: "We would like to express our very sincere thanks to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service for their tremendous efforts throughout today."

ENDS.

Note to editors: It is not anticipated that any further releases will be issued overnight.

Seemingly the students course work has been saved and will be able to be marked..........not every student is happy about that

Probably now win the Turner Prize - Art School on Fire - much nicer than Tracey Emin's unmade bed

The fire service seem to have done a good job. At least the building and many of the contents will not be lost but at one point they were talking about the library. It's a shame if that has been destroyed or badly damaged. They will be able to sort out something for the students but the building is another issue.

The Fire service were outstanding. They choose a more dangerous method of tackling the fire simply to have a chance of saving more of the building. They formed a human chain to save as many artifacts as possible, an outstanding performance.

I am hearing someone painted over a projectors air vents and this is what started the fire

They were outstanding, samsc. Apparently the library has been lost and it was absolutely wonderful. Also the hen run has gone. Still it could have been a much greater tragedy.
