Ethnicity in the UK

Recommended Posts

Views from Canada are depressing:

"xenophobic attitudes are harming Britain’s economy. As the Economist recently wrote, the Prime Minister’s pledge to drive immigration below 100,000 a year has done serious damage – steep visa fees, quotas and restrictions have driven away foreign students, educated elites and investors, while many British companies are moving their operations overseas, where it’s easier to hire the best workers. And it is causing a fiscal crisis – according to the Office for Budget Responsibility, immigration rates will need to double if national debt is to be lowered to half its level (and UKIP’s immigration freeze would double public debt)."

Is this really how the UK looks to the world? And is Doug Saunders right?

There's a lot of accusation but not much analysis. I do feel sorry for a lot of the foreign students who aren't even here to graduate. A lot of them hold jobs while they are here and, of course, with qualifications there's a chance they can contribute and make a decent living. It would seem to make sense that there is some option to extend their stay and remain in the country. Only about half the people from the course I have just completed were here to graduate. None of the Americans were there. A bit expensive to fly back just for the ceremony.

That's something we want to do differently in Scotland and actually encourage such people to stay on and use their talents for Scotland's benefit.

Looks like some moves are being made in that direction, samsc, or at lest plans devised. A new strategy is being put forward in a paper to be launched by SNP tomorrow: "New Scots: Integrating Refugees in Scotland's Communities"

It will spell out their aims and build on. "The Scottish Government's blueprint for independence, published last month, embraced the principle of opposing Westminster's "aggressive" approach to immigration, asylum seekers and refugees and instead encouraging more people to live in Scotland."

One of the main ideas is allowing asylum seekers the opportunity to work. That seems to make sense.

this is just the uk gov (yet again) pandering to the right wing

figures have repeatedly shown that immigrants are beneficial to the country and the economy.

the people of Scotland (and its gov) are proud that we have always welcomes immigrants and refugees and i believe no right wing propaganda will ever alter that fact.

Not everyone has the same view, tig. Theresa just won't be telt.

"Amid concerns that much of the evidence submitted was broadly positive about current rules for freedom of movement, The Times suggests Ms May believes the study underestimates the problem of people coming to Britain to take advantage of the welfare state, which is central to the Government’s rhetoric about cracking down on migrants. Mrs May believes that the EU free movement rules make it too easy for European migrants to come to Britain to establish residence and benefits entitlements."

Review into the impact of immigration on the UK has been delayed. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/government-delays-eu-immigration-report-because-it-is-too-positive-8994264.html

Health workers in and around Glasgow are more likely to be subjected to racist abuse than those in any of other UK health board area, new figures have suggested.

Wha's like us, Eh.

If ever evidence was needed that being part of Better Together results in you hating Scotland, I give you the above...
