Paisley Development Trust Presents: Renfrewshire Witch Hunt 1697

On Saturday 9 June 2012, 10am till 6pm, Paisley town centre will return to 1697 and every citizen of Renfrewshire is invited to dress in historic attire, come into town and join in re-staging the events.

In 1697, eleven year old Christian Shaw became "possessed by witches".

As a result seven citizens of Renfrewshire were put to death and their remains were buried under a horseshoe at Maxwellton Cross in Paisley. Christian and her mother went onto be the founders of the Renfrewshire textile industry and superstition grew that if the horseshoe was ever removed the fortunes of the area would decline.

In the 1960s, during road works, the horseshoe was lifted.

Truth or tale, Paisley Development Trust have decided to revisit the events of 1697 and replace the horseshoe.

Sounds like a great event. Let's hope it reverses the fortunes of this wonderful historic town. So many amazing people come from Paisley including Sandy Stoddart, David Tennant, Gerry Rafferty, John Byrne and Hollowhorn. :) Hope they'll all turn up in their historic gear - or if that's not possible - be there in spirit.

Hope so, Pat, and hope the rain stays away! I am constructing 1000 'tokens' for the event, which involves cutting 800 metres of cord and attaching them to horseshoe charms. Dull and repetitive work! I'll post a wee picture once some are finished :)

Oh god this was torture!! I think I constructed about 350 of them myself, I definitely cut at least 700 lengths of cord by myself! I had some help, but no nearly enough! I liked the finished product, to a point, but they were not really what I wanted.

Took some photos on the day of the event, but my steward position was down at the Abbey, so I didn't see either of the first two re-enactments. The 3rd was good though, and I had a lot of fun, and got sunburnt too!

You made 1000 of those Lynnski. I hope you were appreciated. It sounds like a great event. Paisley always seems to me to be a very historical type of place. Probably because of the Abbey.

Thankfully I didn't make all 1000 by myself Rory, that would have seen me being admitted to Leverndale! The Abbey is lovely, have never been there before, loved it. Very serene, even though it was pretty busy. This photo doesn't do justice to the intense colours in the window, but it gives you an idea:
