Making Work Pay

Recommended Posts

Good for the cleaners at the Department of Work and Pensions in London for speaking up about not being paid a living wage. Iain Duncan Smith who aims to make work pay received a letter from 64 of the people who clean offices at his place of work. They are employed by a private company, Mitie, paying the minimum wage £6.08 an hour. A living wage in London is deemed to be £8.30.

There are far too many people in this country who find it impossible to make ends meet on their pittance of a wage. It's high time this was viewed as a major issue. So hope we've not heard the last of this. Only firms who pay a decent wage should be allowed to run these contracts.

The letter is so sad:

"Every morning we clean these offices and these hallways. Our hard work helps you to do your job properly and comfortably .. However because of our pay, we are struggling every day to buy the things we need."
