The Grand National

Recommended Posts

Okay dokay folks here's the runners and riders.

The odds at the bookies are showing:-

SYNCHRONISED 9/1; SHAKALAKABOOMBOOM 14/1; WEST END ROCKER 14/1; BALLABRIGGS 14/1; ON HIS OWN 14/1; SUNNYHILLBOY 16/1; JUNIOR 16/1; CAPPA BLEU 18/1; CHICAGO GREY 16/1; GILES CROSS 18/1; KILLYGLEN 18/1; BECAUSEICOULDNTSEE 16/1; ORGANISEDCONFUSION 16/1; SEABASS 18/1.

I usually just go for the best Irish horse in the field. However, this year there are loads including the current favourite - Synchronised. However, if I have to chose I would go with two others, West End Rocker (who has been over this course and won) and the OrganisedConfusion, the winner of the 2011 Irish National.

Knowin' nuttin' about racing, I usually pick one with a nice name. I'm going for Seabass to win and Deep Purple as an outsider. Is that what they say?

Seabass has a good shout and if it won would see the first lady jockey to win the national.

Deep Purple is an each way bet as they say :D

Actually, doing the name game, probably the saddest sounding name 'On his own' is on with a good shout, carrying very little weight and a bloody good jockey.

I put a few quid each way on Seabass and Shakalakaboom earlier this week, got much better odds than that

Picked a few outsiders for Pat and myself. And another two for anyone who happens to be in when it's on the telly:

Pat's picks: Midnight Haze and Swing Bill

Jim's whims: Black Apalachi and Chicago Grey

Two to fall on the first circuit: Hello Bud and Calgary Grey.

Jimbo

Now, that does sound like the voice of an expert.

I don't bet horses. I can't bear making a complete erse of myself in the betting shop. The only thing I bet on is Scotland to win the Calcutta Cup.....

All about luck, harper. Although, I worry about the horses being injured. I expect the rugby players know the chance they are taking.

very exciting race with a photo finish.

Sadly two horses had to be destroyed, no doubt several jockeys were injured.

A lady jockey made it into third, the highest ever.

I, sadly, won nought :-(

It was exciting, samsc, but it's terrible that horses were injured. I don't normally watch and had forgotten how dangerous this race is. I don't think I'll participate again. It was upsetting. :(

I didn't see it either but heard on the radio that there will be further talks about the future of the race following the tragic outcome for two horses second year running. I am not clear why this race, in particular, is prone to so many accidents and fatalities.

Big fences and a field of 40 horses, a lot of horses are brought down by a horse in front falling over.

Its also high profile, there are fatalities in other races but little publicity about them.
