Looks like it's closed, Dex, but whether temporarily or not I'm not certain.

I hope it's just for refurbishment but if that was the case you would imagine that they'd put a sign up saying so.

I did a stint there when I was a student and enjoyed it very much. It was very busy in those days but don't know if trade has slackened off.

I think I was on an apprenticeship as it was a long time before they let me pour a pint of Guinness.

When Con Butler owned the place, it used to be heaving every day and night despite it not being on the main road where all the trade was supposed to be. Shame if it's closed as it was one of the better pubs (IMO) in Partick but I imagine it's a hard living now in the licensed trade.

I remember Con well, thomas, and Pat, who was in charge, and Sean, a smart old Irishman who had worked there for years.

Con was very clear about maintaining high standards in the pub so we had to work hard but he was also very generous with his staff. I lived in Old Kilpatrick when I worked there and had my taxi fare paid home when I finished.

Once we started work we had to remain in the pub even during our break. Just to ensure that we didn't 'come back drunk'.

As you say the pub was always 'heaving'. Rumour has it that it was closed because business was so bad. Perhaps another victim of the smoking ban or hard economic times?

The Dowanhill was a real old fashioned pub with no gimmicks. I think you need the gimmicks these days and the passing trade, beer gardens and so forth. The Lismore is in a better location and has the sessions stuff going for it.

A real shame about the Dowanhill, that and the Smiddy were favourite haunts of mine back in the day.

I might take issue with Roy about his reasons behind the defeat of the Republican forces in Spain but thanks for information behind whatīs happening at Anniesland Cross. Iīm looking forward to Freedomīs opening. One of my favourite bars in Manchester was also a conversion: the Temple of Convenience

Reopened and under new management. :) I spoke to a couple of very happy customers today, who were outside having a fag.
