The enfant terrible lived to the grand old age of 84. He caused quite a stir with his films like Women in Love and worked with some of UK's best actors including Glenda Jackson and Vanessa Redgrave.

Ken Russell seems quite tame by today's standards but Women in Love was very edgey back then. I couldn't make much sense of his later work.
