I has it :( Today is day 11 of the swelling and general fatigue. I went back to work on Monday after being off a week, and have promptly been signed back off again. I have a mild fever (temp is just over 38) and the swelling is rather uncomfortable. Have been taking paracetamol and/or ibuprofen when the pain got bad, but am now on orders to take them on a proper regular basis, and have an antiseptic mouthwash to gargle with to try and help. Its viral rather than bacterial, so I can't take antibiotics.

Or, if my suspicions are correct, I could actually have glandular fever. Who knows.

Any hints and tips on how to get rid of the swelling and fever? I'm having lots of foods with chilli, turmeric, garlic, and other spicy foods, with loads of veg too, whereas last week was mostly eating takeaway as the boyfriend caught it too. He recovered really quickly, but I think I have a more severe strain, and I'm asthmatic so things like this affect me more too.

Bleugh :( I'm fed up being tired all the bloody time :(

What a shame, lynnski. That's lasted a long time - no wonder you're fed up.

Another forum member has been in touch after a rotten dose, which they described as a "spectacular bronchial odyssey". There seem to be some hard hitting lurgies going around.

When we complained of sore throats when we were weans we had to gargle with warm water and salt. I still do that and it definitely helps.

B6 and B12 seem to help with tiredness but best of all get as much rest as you can.
Hope you'll be feeling better soon. x

Oh dear! "spectacular bronchial odyssey" sounds awful! Get well soon whoever that is! I'm resisting the urge to make jewellery or do dishes or anything, really am taking it as easy as possible! I have a mouthwash to gargle with, so don't think I'll need the saltwater option, but maybe there's no harm in trying both? Might buy me a pack of multivits, but maybe its too late for that :( Might just stock up on fruit. Bought a supply of super noodles and tins of soup earlier :(

Heavens, lynnski. Get Gareth to make some chicken broth. I doubt there's much goodness in super noodles - they can't be that super!!! The fruit sounds like a good idea.

Someone recommended Berocca to me recently and I think it works:

Ibuprofen's your best bet. Ginger, turmeric and milk thistle are all herbal antiinflammatories, but not sure if the expense would be worth it.

Vitamin D, magnesium citrate and vitamin C are others that have broad positive health benefits, but usually to prevent illness, rather than cure it. Vitamin D is cheap, though. 10 mcg a day should probably be taken by everyone. Avoid megadoses of vitamin C (1,000 mg), except for one off instances when you feel an infection coming on. A 100 mg supplement every other day is okay.

You'd better hope it's not glandular fever. Herpes viruses make everything worse. The Epstein-Barr virus is a herpes virus. I wouldn't be surprised if it made your carpal tunnel condition worse.

Hope you get better soon. I had my tonsils out, aged 7. I've got a permanent, low grade sore throat which is worse when I wake up in the mornings. I'm pretty sure it's caused by streptococcus bacteria ('strep throat').

Curious, what's the link between a herpes virus and carpal tunnel?! :( I don't get cold sores, so I'm probably a herpes carrier rather than a catcher. Could explain why I've never had tonsillitis til now! :( I'll just keep making spicy stir fries with ginger and turmeric then :(

The herpes family cause general inflammation, which can exacerbate existing conditions. Most non-communicable disease is associated with an activated immune system, and it's the chronic immune activation which causes the adverse health effects.

Epstein-Barr, which causes glandular fever, has been particularly associated with multiple sclerosis. Cold sores are caused by herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1), which is associated with an increased incidence of a variety of diseases, including schizophrenia.

Yeah Maggs, seems I'm ok with it. First started taking it about 15 years ago when I injured my back, and have been using it ever since. Every now and then a doctor reviewing my notes will ask how I get on with it, I just tell them no apparent ill effects, and they're fine with it :(

Hope you had a good sleep and feeling better today, lynnski.

Regarding yonza's advice on building up the immune system. Something that is being prescribed nowadays, and stumbled upon by chance, is low dose Naltrexone.

First I've heard of low dose naltrexone. It's an absolute scandal that governments won't intervene to fund trials for a highly promising drug when drug companies won't invest because the drug can't be patented by them.

You poor thing, Lynski. If you can, I'd see a complimentary therapist for some constitutional treatment.. Sounds like you need something to support your immune system.

I always use a TCP diluted and gargle with warm water.
Follow up with a spoonful of Glycerine to smooth the throat.
The salt mouthwash is a good one too.

I have had similar problems, always 'viral' but after 3 weeks, it turned rather nasty and after a dose of antibiotics, within 3 days the thing was on the mend. I would go back and ask for a second opinion to be honest.

I think thomas is offering good advice there, lynnski. Maybe time to see the doc again.

I've been taking a herbal medicine for five years. It's called Samento and builds up the immune system. It turned me around when I was really pretty ill due to having contracted Lyme Disease.

I also swear by the Manuka Honey.

I've been to docs twice now. 1st time was Monday 23rd, I didn't have a fever then, took myself off work for a week on a self-cert. Went back to work on the Monday 30th, felt awful. Tues was my day off, I slept til 2 in the afternoon and felt like death. Went back to Docs Wed 1st, saw a different Doc, did have a very mild fever and was signed off til Monday coming, with the prescription for the mouthwash. The thing that worries me is the utter exhaustion. Just having a shower tires me out, filling the dishwasher makes me need a nap! Think I'm getting a bit better now, hopefully so!

Try drinking ginger juice; it's an age-old remedy for sore throat/tonsilitis. To prepare, just boil water with ginger, get the juice and add a teaspoon of honey or sugar. Does wonders and helps you recover faster ;)

Well, I'm now on my 3rd dose of this! I had bacterial tonsillitis over December, had to miss an exam because of it. Was put on 8 penicillin a day and got loads of rest, and it had cleared up by the end of the treatment (around 10 days). Had a sore throat on Sunday, and had the swollen face/throat by Monday, saw the doctor yesterday and its viral this time again so no meds. I've been drinking lots of black or green tea and hot blackcurrant as the warmth seems to help. I think I'll have some rum in the blackcurrant tonight to try and help me sleep :D

I pointed out to the doctor that this is my 3rd time in 11 months, and he informed me that in order to consider removal, I'd need to have it 5-6 times in a year, or it would have to have a huge impact on my life. So far I've missed 3 separate weeks at work and am currently missing a 4th, and missed an exam, that's pretty inconvenient! I don't really want to go through a surgery like that, but I'm getting pretty fed up feeling like this!

Poor you, it sounds very demoralising. Sounds like you might be suffering from a bit of studentitis as well. Are you looking after yourself?

Tell you what I would do....

Don't skimp on rest...
Get some immune boosting herbs or tincutre, probiotics and stress reducing tea. Ask at Neale's Yard or that nice wee shop round the corner from the library... can't remember the name. It's across from thewre the police buildings used to be, up from the close where I bloodied a boy's nose for trying to nick my skates - just before the lane. I'm sure you will find it:)

How fashion changes. I had my tonsils, appendix and the nose things whipped out when I was 3/4 and I think it would be easier to get a private herion script out my GP then antibiotics these days.

Take care of yourself wee lamb. We need our bright young minds of the future fit and tickity boo:)

I am not sure if I was unlucky or lucky reading Lynsky's problems with tonsilitis.

I was of a generation (child of the 60s) where they whipped them out first sign of a cough.
