On Sunday the 10th of April we are having a 'Forest Gardening' workshop, which is detailed as follows:
* What are the desirable characteristics of a plant for this type of garden?
* Perennials - annuals - bulbs and tubers
* Making the most of Shade and Woodland Edge - choosing right plant for each situation - plant selection exercise
* Practical - Preparing the ground
* Break
* Roll-call of ground cover perennials - defining site, spacing, special requirements of those being planted. Get suggestions for others and good companions.
* Planning exercise followed by planting
* What now? How to maintain, use, harvest, propagate and multiply these perennials - interactive exercise.
* Summary and questions.
The workshop will run from 12 - 5 and the cost of the day is just £5. If you are interested please do email back so we can book you a place, it will be a very interesting workshop, and well worth it.
Opening hours
The community garden is open as always on Saturday and Sundays from 12 - 5. we still have trees to plant and beds to make and seeds to sow and buildings to build and lots of things to do so if you would like to come down at any time,please do pop in.

DATE CHANGE - NO LONGER ON SUNDAY 10TH BUT SATURDAY 9TH APRIL
Forest Gardening Workshop
The date for the Forest Gardening Workshop has changed, and is now running this Saturday 9th April from 12 - 5 at the community garden.
We will be planting Damson trees, Caraway, Alpine Basil-thyme, Wild Strawberries, Serpent Garlic, White Chives, Wild Mountain Thyme and other such lovely sensory and herbal plants. As well this, we are sowing wild flower meadows on site and learning all about planting perennials for shade, food and the benefit of wildlife.
The session is being facilitated by a very experienced gardener and costs just £5 which, in our humble opinion, is well worth it. It would be lovely to see you there and we hope to do so on Saturday!
Film Night at the Community Garden
Thursday the 7th April from 7.30pm, we are having a film night at the community garden in association with Edible Egilsay, where we will be showing 'From Earth to the Pot' - about urban food production in Lima - and other different short films all about food. Information received today from Adam Waldron-Blain - Woodlands Community Garden:
I'm starting this Wednesday night (11 May) at 9:00pm with the first Woodlands round of Manhunt, an inclusive weekly hide-and-seek game which I've run for the last few years in Edmonton, Canada. We'll meet at the Community Garden and play in the area for about an hour. The weekly games are organised through the website http://manhunt-glasgow.tumblr.com and a few more details about how it works are given there—but really all you need to do is show up, and we'll take care of the rest then.
Even if you're a bit nervous about running around in Woodlands at night, I'll also be giving a short talk about my practice and the Woodlands projects on Saturday at 1:00 pm, hopefully to be followed by a bit of discussion. As well as organising games on the streets, I'll be spending the month making music in some of the forgotten spaces in the neighbourhood, and I'll have some information on the weekend about when you can come find me performing and what it's all about.
I'll be running Manhunt on Wednesdays and exploring the space with my violin through the first week of June, and will cap it off with a new participatory game project on Sunday 5 June. I hope you'll come join me over the month.

This weekend at the community garden
We will be in the garden again this week from 12 - at least 5 on Saturday and Sunday and it would be great to see you there. We still have a lot of work to do to finish off the garden and have recently suffered some vandalism on the hub, which we need to make secure and will be focussing on this weekend, it would be great to ensure the site is secure and safe for all to use.
Meeting this Sunday in the garden
Between 2 - 4 this Sunday we will be having a meeting in the garden to discuss how things are working, what could be done differently and how we can take the project forward through the summer, anybody is welcome to attend and it would be great to get your input into the future of the garden. If you were interested in taking on a more hands on role as a site supervisor helping to facilitate open days on the site then that would be great as well. Come along and have your say.
Old Folk Hits a New Groove - Friday the 20th May
On Friday the 20th of May we will be having an event in the garden from 7 - 10pm which includes dinner and live folk music from Bard and others, in aid of the Woodlands Community Garden and Edible Egilsay (http://www.edibleegi....wordpress.com/). Suggested donation of £4 for the dinner and music, it would be lovely to see you there.

1. Events In The Garden

Help us with landscaping, tidying communal areas, weeding and watering. Come along to help us finish building a community garden for all to share and enjoy.
GROW Monday evenings starting 25th July 5pm - 8pm.
Garden Revolution of West End invite you to our new weekly sessions. To carry out work maintaining the garden, plotting new garden share and back- court growing ideas and sharing skills. Bring food to share and join us to sow the seeds of change!
Rudimentary Perfection Sunday 17th July Bike tour of Murals and Film Screening.
The garden will be one stop on a tour of sites that have had a mural make-over thanks to street artists commissioned by Recoat Gallery. Meet at Recoat Gallery, 323 North Woodside Road at 2pm for bike tour and 4pm for film screening. More details
2. Turning Woodlands Green Together
Work is underway on our Climate Action project. We are finalising plans for a series of events connected with turning Woodlands Green, ranging from encouraging people to grow their own food in back-courts; providing advice about becoming more energy efficient and promoting cycling and car-sharing. Our next Garden update will give you more information about events we are planning on August 13th (local food event in collaboration with Stravaigin restaurant) and September (sustainable energy and transport). Get in touch if you wanted to find out more or help in any way.
3. Harvest Festival
On Saturday 8th October Woodlands Community Garden will be celebrating the end of the growing year with a harvest festival. Organised in collaboration with leading environmental arts company NVA, it will take place from 12pm - 4pm. Put the date in your diary and we will update you soon with more details.
4. New Staff In Post
The Community Garden has two new part-time workers. Tim Cowen is working 3 days a week as Project Manager overseeing the work of the Garden's Climate Action Project which is funded by the Climate Challenge Fund. Joyce Morgan has joined the team one day per week to support our wonderful team of volunteers and encourage more people to get involved. Nina Wesolowski is now working 2 days a week as our Energy Awareness Officer.

Woodlands Community Garden And Climate Action Hub : Events Update
There's lots coming up in the garden over the next couple of months, so here is a list of dates for your diaries. We'll be sending out publicity materials and booking information for our urban growing, creative containers and local food event over the next week as well as distributing the publicity for our big Harvest Festival on 8th October. We are also planning a range of activities relating to energy efficiency and sustainable transport and will let you know dates of these events as soon as things are finalised. Garden Work Times : Extended opening hours
From now until the end of September the garden will be open each week at the following times for people to come along and help us with work in the garden
Mondays 5-8pm
Thursdays 5-8pm
Sundays 12 midday - 5pm
There's plenty of work still to be done in the garden, including:
* creating a disabled access ramp,
* building more raised beds,
* digging a pond (being made out of an old bath!)
* erecting our sign and notice-board
* tidying up our woodstore
* painting fences
* planting wildflower areas
* finishing our climate action hub meeting space
* landscaping our social meeting area
* turning an old wooden waffle van into into an energy awareness roadshow stall
We are having a big push on getting this work completed ahead of our big harvest festival event on 8th October, so please come along and help if you can! All tools and equipment provided, but please wear hard shoes and bring waterproofs and some food to share.

More Old Folk Hits, a New equinox Groove

Summer is officially drawing to a close, the hurricane has passed and the Woodlands gardens still stand tall and looking amazing. To experience them in equinox splendour come along on Friday 23rd September, from 6.30- 9.30pm, for a musical fundraiser and celebration of all things autumnal.
We will be joined by the amazingly talented violinist extraordinaire Max Baillie (www.maxbaillie.com) who's in town for a gig at the City Halls. Max will be treating us to tunes and story songs (think 300 year old boatmen, willow tree dwelling babies) amongst the veggies... and that's not all, there will be folky support from other musical minstrels, yummy curry (or something equally tempting), steaming Chai and other magical happenings...
We'll be taking donations on the door and for food with money going to support Edible Egilsay and Woodlands Community Garden. Edible Egilsay (edibleegilsay.wordpress.com) is a community garden in Orkney growing tasty greens for the Orkney Solstice festival and other local folk.
Everyone is welcome. Bring your friends, kids, dogs, stories, jokes, an instrument, bellies and ears.

Model clay oven workshop
Sunday 2nd October 3-4pm
In the lead up to the big day, Stephen Skrynka will be running a FREE family friendly workshop exploring the key techniques used to build a pizza oven, and you will have the chance to make your own mini model oven out of clay to take home. No booking needed, just come along. More details about the workshop and other NVA pizza related activity attached!

Harvest Festival
This Saturday! 8th October, 12 midday - 4pm The final Harvest event of 2011 is being hosted by Woodlands Community Garden on West Princes St, this Saturday . The NVA Glasgow Harvest is a celebration of local food being hosted by community gardens in the South, East, North and West of the city this autumn. An irreverent homage to the village fete - centred on the Harvest Meal - each celebration will feature live music, communal cooking, food sharing, workshops and competitions. New work by visual artists will draw inspiration from the people and garden spaces that make urban growing in Glasgow so unique. It's a family friendly event, with facepainting and other children's activities.
During the festival our Climate Action Hub will be buzzing with activity. You can:
visit our Red Energy Stall to find out how you can stay warm and reduce your bills
take part in a Local Food Networking Game (2.30-3.30pm)
have your bike serviced for free by Dr Bike (12-2.30)
commit to reduce your carbon, by signing one of our Climate Pledges
be inspired to grow your own by taking a Garden Tour
find out about our Creative Containers made from recycled junk
get info on upcoming courses and events such as our Meat Free Monday Vegetarian Cookery Classes

Design and plant up a Creative Container
Choose an unusual object to grow something in and enter it in the competition.
Bring a jar to the tasting station
Make your own jam, chutney, pickles or preserves and bring a jar, along with the recipe, for a mass tasting. Oatcakes, crackers and cheese provided!

An open meeting to review our first year of growing and discuss our growing plans for 2012. Everyone Welcome - even if not previously involved in the garden. If you are interested in applying for a raised bed or assisting with our communal growing, but cannot make it to the meeting - please get in touch and we will send you out more details about how you can apply for a growing space in 2012.
Wednesday 30th November
Fuel Efficient Driving Lessons (50% discount for early bookers!)
Bookings are now being taken for our Fuel-efficient driving lessons. Save up to 15% on your petrol bills, by coming on our training and improving your driving technique. Each lesson lasts for 50 minutes and is carried out by an approved driving instructor, accredited by the Energy Saving Trust. The normal cost of these lessons is £40, and thanks to Energy Savings Trust we've brought the costs down still further to £12. On top of this Woodlands Garden are offering to pay half of this fee for people who book before November 16th. Meaning that your lesson would just cost just £6.
Time slots are available from between 9.00 am and 3.20pm. Pick up and drop off from Albany Centre, GCVS - just round the corner from our community garden. Full driving license is required. To book a place please email woodlandscommunitygarden@gmail.com with your name, address,telephone number and preferred lesson time. If you need any more information please get in touch. If you can't make it on 30 November, but would be interested in attending on another date - please let us know and we will put you on our waiting list for repeat sessions.
Meat Free Mondays : Vegetarian Cookery Classes
The first four weeks of our course are now about full - but we are still taking bookings for Weeks 5 (5th December) and Week 6 (12th December). If you missed out on the earlier weeks, then its still worth sending in a booking form so that we can put you on our reserve list in case,as usually happens, some people drop out. Full details attached. We also hope to run some similar courses again in the New Year.
Monday Grow Sessions
Meeting Monday evenings 6-8pm in Beanscene on Woodlands Road to mulch over ideas for spreading the garden revolution across the West End, in particular planning garden share schemes and back-court growing packs.

Want to Share a Raised Bed During 2012 : Apply Now!
Applications are now being taken for people interested in having a raised bed growing space at Woodlands Community Garden during 2012.
If you had a raised bed during 2011 and would like to have a raised bed again in 2012 or haven't had a raised bed before, but would like to apply for one
Then we need you to complete a short online applicaton form
The current deadline for getting your application back to us is Friday 16th December.
We hope to make a decision on who gets a raised bed during January 2012, with growing spaces available from mid February 2012 onwards. We will be arranging induction workshops for new growers, so don't be put off from applying if you haven't had previous growing experience.
It's likely that more people will apply than there are places, so priority will be given to people who are living or working in Woodlands. To maximise the number of people who can have a growing space you will be given a share of a raised bed rather than a full bed.
We are also exploring ways of expanding communal growing outwith the raised beds, including working closely with GROW on a garden share scheme. If you don't feel you can commit to having a raised bed, but would be interested in helping out with communal growing and/or a garden share scheme please let us know via by email

Come along to chat over plans for allocating raised beds in 2012, reflect on our first year of growing and to mulch over plans for next year.
Yuletide festivities in the garden ....

Music, mulled wine, storytelling, soup, clay oven bread, christmas crafts
Glasgow's very own Muldoon's Picnic will be treating us to some a'capella carol singing from their weird and wonderful repertoire of folk songs old and new...
We'll be lighting the clay oven for fresh and firey bread and dishing up plenty of hearty soup, all to be washed down with toasty mulled wine.
Warm your hands and heart by the fire and bring wee ones along for silly stories and christmas crafts.
Bring an instrument, a song, a story, friends, pets, hungry bellies and festive cheer....
£4 suggested donation, with free food included. Raising funds for Woodlands Community Garden and Edible Egilsay
