I've got very happy memories of Partick and had digs in Apsley Street when I went to university. At present I'm considering moving back. Would anyone on the forum recommend it? I wouldn't imagine it has been gentrified to any great extent.

Don't know when you lived there, rory, so you might see some changes but Partick is a great place and has a real buzz about it. Perhaps some 'gentrification' with some posh flats but there is a real mix of people living, working and socialising there. I would definitely recommend it.

That sounds very encouraging. Thanks. I won't be after a posh flat and hope that I can find some place reasonable to rent. I'm coming for a look around in two weeks. Any ideas about where I should investigate?

My intention is to rest my head in Partick if possible. I hope I will also "play" there or spend some of my time in local pubs, cafes, restaurants and also visit some galleries. Obviously I know of Kelvingrove. My favourite food is Indian and I like pubs with live music. I prefer to keep my work information to myself. Does everyone on the forum know where other members work?

That's what I meant by not needing to be too specific but a general work area might make it easier to advise on things like proximity to bus routes, subway or train stations and so on.

You'll find most of what you want in or near Partick. A wide choice of pubs and restaurants and handy for Kelvingrove, the new Transport Museum, the University museums and so on.

Hi Rory I lived 'up the hill' from you in Thornwood for more years than I care to remember. Partick hasn't changed much at all, some familiar shops have gone (Hoeys, Woolies, sob! sob!) others have come in their place, we have a new Railway Station Transport Hub in Merkland Street so you can still invade almost anywhere in Scotland from Partick. Pub culture remains vibrant and we have added to the street carnival with events like Rio style parade of the West End Festival and the quite sensational Mela all focussing around the Kelvingrove Park (Partick East )

I know the station and the links to the underground but should be within walking distance of work depending on where I can find to rent. Are there some decent Indian restaurants around Partick?

There are more takeaways than you can shake a stick at. There are also four or five Indian restaurants in Partick proper and several more in Greater Partick :-)

I enjoyed looking at the photographs. I might not be moving to Partick after all. I have seen a very pleasant flat in Garnethill. Seems very convenient for most things. I am dwelling on it at the moment but don't want to loose the opportunity. I need to move pretty soon. I'm looking forward to being in the city.

Hope it works out for you, Rory. I've always been rather fascinated by Garnethill - some great history up there with the Art School, St Aloysius and the Synagogue. The large Chinese community in the area also gives it a distinct flavour. A particular bonus would be having the Glasgow Film Theatre on your doorstep and you would be very handy for the buzz of Sauchiehall Street. Mind you some might consider that to be a mixed blessing; as of a week-end it can be a wee bit rowdy - not that Partick is the quietest place in Glasgow.

I have already picked up a number of things in the Salvation Army and I have found another shop with some decent stuff. Think it's in Vine Street.

Certainly plenty of furniture and household stuff to be found in Partick's many second hand and charity shops. You might also be interested in the auction rooms down at Whiteinch.

I well remember Tomlinson`s football factory just beside Partick station. Their "T" balls were much used in Scotland and all over the world I think. Does anyone know when they started and when they closed? I think it was some time in the 70s.

Welcome to the forum, Spiderman. Ian Mitchell mentions a Tomlinson's factory in his feature on Partick.

"Up Norval Street off Crow Road generations of Pertick wummen toiled in Tomlinson's factory making cardboard boxes; you could watch then from the passing blue trains at Partick Station. Today its bright pastel exterior and atrium roof proclaim it as The Printworks apartment block."

It looks as though there was more than one Tomlinson - or Thomlinson, business in Partick

1925 John Thomlinson Ltd, Stanley Works, Partick, Glasgow.

William Thomlinson owned the Greenbank Leather Works, which produced the famous Thomlinson "T" football, the most famous make of football in Britain before the advent of the modern ball made of stitched hexagons and pentagons. His brother John had a stationer's business at the Stanley Works behind it in Norval Street. John Thomlinson Ltd continued trading in the printing and packaging business until 1999."
