Despite the heavy snowfall today, and pretty treacherous pavements, I really needed to go out for some shopping. I spend ages this morning phoning the bank, as I need a new cheque book but their line was engaged for ages and then just ringing out so I decided just to order one in the bank.
I also needed to do a wee bit of grocery shopping and other destinations included the library and the charity shop as I had seen a notice on their window asking for donations of books.

Off I set all wrapped up with my wee trolley already laden with six library books and five books for the charity shop. I trundled along with some difficulty heading for my first stop, the bank, it was closed 'due to weather conditions'. The charity shop was also closed so I headed round to the library and wasn't too surprised to find that this was also shut.

Had I been wise I would then have headed home but ever the optimist, I thought I would maybe get some Christmas shopping and my messages then phone Jim, Michael or John to come and pick me up. I headed for Poundstretchers as I wanted to buy some wool and that cheered me up as I got some beautiful white wool with diamante bits in it and some lovely green wool with sparkles - our wee girls will be getting some lovely crocheted hats in their stockings. I also got more wee girl presents in the sale in Mothercare.

Afterwards I headed over to Morrisons and put in my prescription, only to be told that I'll need to go back on Wednesday as they "don't have all the items". Anyway I carried on shopping and loaded up with stuff for soups and stews, over and above our usual staples.

Mission accomplished I then phoned for a lift but Michael was snowed in with his car stuck in his street and other mobile numbers were coming up as 'network busy' so no menfolk with vehicles to take me home. I had no idea how I was going to manage but I put my own trolley in one of Morrison's trolleys with plastic bags full of shopping and with tremendous difficulty managed to get to the end of their car park. I didn't really feel that I could reasonably take the trolley all the way home but abandoned it with some reluctance.

I was slipping all over the place trying to lift my trolley out of the big trolley, why did I wear my MBTs?, and managed to knock the trolley over and spill lots of shopping onto the snow. I could have gret but three young people came to my rescue. They picked the stuff up and got me sorted - well sorta balanced and I slowly made my way down to Great Western Road. When I got to the bottom I stopped to catch my breath and readjust my bags wondering how I was actually going to make it home - usually a five minute walk - when I hard someone shouting "do you need a lift?".

At first I thought it was someone I knew but it was just a kind, young fella in a beautiful copper coloured jeep. I explained that I was actually just going round the corner but he said to throw the messages in and he would take me. What relief! Two minutes later I was at my door, got the shopping out and he gave a cheery toot as he drove off.

Now back in our nice warm house and the spuds on. Don't let me hear anyone say a thing about young folks today. Looks like the Christmas spirit is alive and well. :)

Respect to anyone who had to venture out in the snow today. I saw the conditions on the news *sheesh* Posted Image

MBTs are great. I bought some when my back was really bad. I knew I was a city slicker when I nearly slid on ma ass at the Samye Ling Buddhist Centre in Eskdalemuir, while trying to negotiate their muddy paths in full foot gear ... Posted Image

No snow here, just dark and cold. The shops are mad and the tubes are full of students dressed up as bears and monkeys protesting in advance of the vote this week. Not a reindeer in sight... Posted Image

"MBTs are great", harper, and my theory was that they had a nice thick sole so would lift me out of the snow but I've now discoverd that the rolling gait doesn't work in these conditions.

Choice of footwear requires a bit of thought when the snow lies deep and drenching and dangerous. My wellies are probably the best bet but I feel they slow me down as they are so trudgy. My son bought me Uggs last year for Christmas and I've worn them once, very cosy; I'm probably completely wrong in thinking that there is no point in wearing them in the rain or the snow because they are so light in colour?

I have a pair of great walking shoes and loads of fancy boots but just can't find my Docs anywhere. :(

I got some fur lined caterpillar boots last year to stop me skiting all over the place on London's non existent snow ... Posted Image

Like the sound of the Caterpillars, harper. Worth a thought. Mind you I've treated the Uggs with weather protectant spray and they sure are cosy but not much of a grip.

Anyway on they went today and I set off on a repeat mission complete with trolley and books. Our pavement is treacherous so I had to walk out on the road.

First stop was the bank. Didn't need to go in but, unfortunately, the cash line was out of commission. Headed along to the charity shop with the books. All the other shops were open so I wasn't anticipating it being closed, however, big sign 'Shop Closed Due to Burst Pipes'. I carried on round to the library but it was also closed. Why I have no idea.

I didn't make the same mistake as before so just bought a chicken and a few other bits and bobs rather than pile up the shopping.

I thought I would offload the books at the other charity shop across the road and I could see that the lights were on. I almost went head first negotiating the piled up slush at the side of the road but made it across - only to find that it was also closed.

I feel like putting the damn books in the bin and have a look for a form to reclaim council tax. I could do with going for a swim to de-stress but I expect the baths are bound to be closed as well.

At least the schools are in today.
