Ian Rankin came up with a great character in Rebus. I thought that Ken Stott suited the part a lot more than John Hannah.

Just finished reading Alan Warner's 'The Stars in the Bright Sky'. I didn't realise that is was part of a sequel and a follow on from his book 'The Sopranos' about a group of female school friends. In his second book they've left school and meeting up to go on holiday. However, it's not the storyline that grips you but Warner's amazing grasp of dialogue and the imagery he paints of the girls; the nuances of the various characters, their shallow concerns, their humanity, their peccadilloes and their sheer lust for life. His writing is fascinating and hilarious. Gifted man.
