Scottish Independence ...

Recommended Posts

good bit in the FT today about scotland real wealth....doubt it will get mentioned in any of the scots media tho.

(you need to pay subs to see it online so a link would be pointless) but well worth a read if you can get hold of a copy

edit: here a link to the WOS story on the article http://wingsoverscotland.com/unleashing-a-firestorm/

Did anyone see George Galloway on the telly last night making a plea for his 'Say Naw' campaign – he refuses to be part of Better Together.

One of his worries is that if Scotland gains Independence that the rest of the UK will forever after be ruled by the Tories. Possibly he needs to sell his Socialist message in the South but in the meantime his auld allies such as Dennis Canavan are all for Independence. Nonetheless, does George still hold some sway? I thought it was smart of him pushing the factors of the common man that bind us together with our neighbours - telly watching being one of them. A big leap from the Eton boy messages we hear from Cameron and Co.

The UK is stuck in its ever right ward drifting ways. It will take something catastrophic to shake it from its apathy. Scotland breaking away will be good for the rest of the UK, it will wake up people who so far have been happy to be managed while their elite rob them blind

Bang on, Sam.

I am wondering why Galloway is entering the debate in this way - self promoter to the end. The very thought of Galloway even standing for First Minister is enough to give me an attack of the vapours.

Cameron did well on Channel 4 and well deserved dig about the floods in Somerset and the Westminster elite. He was certainly sharp and had his facts all lined up. Whatever else he knows how to debate.

Not sure if this is the right place for it, but I need some help. I intend to be in Scotland for the Referendum, possibly to report on the countdown and the vote for an on-line or print outlet. The MSM will cover the obvious stuff, but I'll be more interested in the view from street level (Edinburgh or Glasgow.) Where do you think 'ground zero' will be when the results come in? I'd be most grateful to learn of any scheduled party-type events (be they celebrations or wakes) should you good folks hear of any. In the meantime I'm immersing myself in the issue. Which commentators, pols and journalists do you think are the most eloquent on either side? (I already ingest the Herald coverage religiously.)

Many thanks.

Sgriob, I'll have a think and keep you posted. Nearer the time there will no doubt be plans for parties or wakes – I'll put those I hear of up on my what's on section of the website and also add to the calendar on the forum. I can also point you to some 'friends' on facebook that you may want to keep tabls on.

Gave me a wee lift tonight so see you and HH exchanging views. :)

She certainly had a sense of purpose when she was lining up the mines for closure and lying about it. I hope the plan for the Thatcher Museum is going to be ditched.

Thanks all (HollowHorn? You yet live?). The rough plan so far is to catch a couple of weeks of the Festival, then repair to Tayside to await our fate. Probably set up HQ in Perth. So far I'm the only one in my (original) family who supports Yes. I gave them all a good lambasting last time I was in-country, but whit can ye dae, short of sending them to re-education camps? I'm definitely up for a swally or two.

This made me laugh. Seems a fair response to those who want to make the Referendum about Alex Salmond.

Ha ha. Too right. This is why Cameron wants to hang onto us. http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/11/26/20-things-we-love-about-scotland_n_4342857.html

The Independence discussion on telly last night by the experts didn't say much and missed out some big issues. E.G.|We didn't hear anything about how much would be saved by ditching Trident. I had a laugh at the guy who said there wasn't much choice regarding where it could be moved to because it had to be away from populations. Looks like Glasgow and Argyle don't count.
