Likewise. We have spent many a wistful and nostalgic hour wandering around with the kids, but I think think the Riverside will be even better.

For real bus fans there is a fantastic Vintage Bus Museum over in Fife. We travelled through and spent a great long weekend in the beautiful seaside village called Elie. For Fife self catering we chose Elie Cottage and it was great.

I saw the engine when it was in the Square. It's massive and pretty impressive.

The date for the opening of the new transport museum is given, rather vaguely, as early Summer, 2011. Seems like a million miles away on such a cold and stormy day but can't be long now.

Plenty going on down at the Riverside with plans also underway for a floating village down on the Clyde - with a place for folks to park their yatchs. :)

Slightly less so, but still vague. Summer has been pegged down to June:

Slight edit, Kelvingrove Museum's twitter feed states it as exactly 21st June.

Thanks, lynnski. We've eertainly missed the museum so will be great to have it opened again. Maybe some nice summer jaunts down to the riverside. :(

Looking forward to it! Pass the museum most days going to work, can't wait to get over there with the camera!

Nice way to start the day, lynnski, especially when we get some blue skies. :(

I hear that Robbie Coltrane has donated his Chrysler Jeep to the Museum.

I like the idea of the ferry across the water, lynnski. There was a preview of the museum on the news tonight - I think it will be very popular with both Glaswegians and tourists. Lots more items on display and the situation is great down on the Clydeside with the Glenlee anchored nearby.

There's going to be a lot more opportunity to 'hop aboard' and, of course, the children just love that. I was a bit bemused by some of the vehicles on display high up on the wall - that's going to be very different and could be a bit frustrating if you get your eyes on something you would like to examine up close.

They've also got a lot of the touch screen stories with information. I've never been a big fan of those. More often than not you have to queue for a look and no chance of pondering as more people arrive behind you.

The Victorian street has been been expanded and looks very interesting. The museum is due to open on 21st June.

Really looking forward to this opening. I hope they have retained the wee cinema and its regular showing of Bugs Bunny cartoons

It's looking good, samsc. Report in today's Herald; they've certainly pulled together some interesting exhibits incuding:"the Subaru Impreza the late Colin McRae drove to victory in the 1995 World Rally Championship, home-made bicycles built by world record-breaker Graeme Obree, a dress worn by Audrey Hepburn ..."

This should be fun: "Visitors exploring the city's history can enter Le Rendezvous cafe, the Mitre bar, a 1960s garage, pawnshops, dress shops, a toy shop and Subway stations."

I too look forward to a wee daunder round the new museum.Im a bit puzzled how Im going to get a keek in to the old cars parked 20 feet up the wall on a shelf!Still the place looks great and I think is in an ideal spot with the river outside.Im also looking forward to getting a look in the Train from Africa. It looks immense.I think we will have to keep an eye on the soosiders coming over the horizon though. :(
Re usage for the Kelvinhall,I would love to see it being used for concerts.A few years ago I saw Bob Dylan at a venue called the Point in Dublin and I think the general layout was similar ie a long narrow building with thick walls, creating a great sound. We really do have enough nondescript modern apartment blocks in the west end and I really hope the Kelvinhall does not give way to such a development.
My first car and I think there is one in the museum was a blue Morris Minor.Babe magnet.(In my dreams)

I spent a couple of hours there this afternoon (Wednesday). I can't recommend it highly enough.

There are some things I'd have done differently, some things I'd not have done at all but over all it's just wonderful.

Big chunks are still out of bounds and there's obviously much to be done in less than a week so I wouldn't feel the need to rush down there next Tuesday but don't delay too long.

Last thing. Take the weans.

Going to our first outing with Ryan as soon as I hit Scottish soil. I'm looking forward to seeing the new museum. Where's a good place to eat down by the river? Wonder if the City Cafe still a good option.

We made it along to the Transport Museum today. It was busy but it's pretty spacious. It's fantastic, especially, the wee street - even more interesting than before. There are lots of magnificient examples of transport from prams to humungous trains. Well worth hundreds of visits. We will definitely be back.

I like the wee cafe with super views down the river and it's great watching the traffic with the ferry between the north and south bank. Even the weans were mesmerised. We had a wander round to The Tall Ship - ideal spot for it to be harboured beside the new museum.

Tried to go to day but after 40 minutes in never ending traffic queues abandoned that idea for the science museum

There was an awful lots of traffic, samsc. We went in a taxi and got dropped within walking distance but there was no queue to get in so perhaps there was an additional problem causing the jam. There are buses to and from George Square and Kelvingrove. On the way back we got dropped at Partick Station so pretty convenient.

Pretty wonderful that there is no charge into this great facility. Hope you get along soon.

I'll be hanging off till Autumn arrives, Pat. I don't think I could cope with all the school kids. (I expect they will be taking over the library soon. At the moment there's one daft faither here with his child in a pram and one helluva noise as he loves his wee drum.) I'm about at screaming point.

The Riverside sounds pretty attractive but I think there was a huge amount of affection for the old building in Bunhouse Road. What's planned for development there?

Glasgow Museums* and Glasgow University Hunterian Museum are in the early stages of exploring a joint museum research centre and store as part of the redevelopment of the Kelvin Hall.

Glasgow Museums* currently stores over 400,000 objects in a leased building in Maryhill where conditions are far from ideal and public access to the collection is difficult. Collections there include furniture and interiors, Glasgow history and archaeology. In addition, a unique treasure, the Charles Rennie Mackintosh-designed interiors of the Ingram Street Tearooms are cared for there. They are the only complete suite of original Mackintosh tearoom interiors to survive.

In creating a joint facility within the Kelvin Hall an unprecedented level of access to the collection will be possible. Combined with greater levels of collection care and research this project would be the first of its kind between a university and a local authority-owned collection.

This project is running from 2010 to 2015 in partnership with Glasgow University Hunterian Museum.

Glasgow Museums

Sounds like a worthwhile venture, Dex. The more treasures on display in our city the better. The Hunterian has both a fantastic gallery and museum so they should bring plenty of expertise to the project.
