I'm no about to give it overt promo by naming it; but a new shop opened the other day on Byres down near Highburgh Rd corner.

Vintage clothing, bags, shoes and hats. For boys and gals. I'm pining already for the 70s maroon velvet jacket and black platform suede boots in the window. Total originals in great condition..

It's about time we stuck two fingers up at the homogenised fashion cloning of these times and rediscovered our style. Gents, there are some mighty Ben Sherman shirts and great leather and suede jackets.......and for rockers, some great cowboy boots, pristine and a lot less than at R Soles of Kings Road....

Had a lovely browse round Vintage Guru on Wednesday. It's excellent and was chock a block - I just love to see new shops opening. A little sparkle on Byres Road.
This is me since yistirday.

Ummm, depends.

Loads of things are 10-20 squid, the rarer stuff a bit dearer. Expensive compared to Pr*mark I suppose but cheap compared to Cru*se. Does that help at all? <_< ;)

Isn't the pants shop now some kind of interior decor place?

And what's happening at the closed 'Lost in Books' shop? They didn't last long.

One of them, not sure which one, is now St Margaret's Hospice Charity Shop.

I expect it's hard for bookshops to compete against the large bookstores in town.

It does. Thank you. Now all I need is a definition of 'vintage'. ;)

Good grief, you've really got it in for that underpants shop, haven't you? <_< I never visited Lost In Books. Was it any relation to the much-lamented and now somewhere online Lost In Music?

From memory, there are now 7 on Byres Road:
New hospice shop
Save the children
Barnardos
Oxfam music
Oxfam
Cancer research
Oxfam books

So the conclusion is?

Rent and rates too punitive for small specialist shops to survive?

or

Too many shops selling stuff people don't need or want?

or

Big supermarkets selling loss-leading non-food items cheaper than specialist stores?

All, or at least some, or the above. Still nice that we have the lovely vintage shop. I was in there again today. I think there are some real bargains, and lovely items, to be had.

Tell me you didn't buy the black suede 70s platform boots I had my eye on?

They're MINE I tell you, MINE!

I think the 'pants' shop is now a lovely wee gift/interiors shop called 'The Wooden Heart'. Not had a look inside but the window is very nice.

I heard the former Whistler's Mother's about to reopen an all.

<It's next to where the much-lamented-by-people-of-taste-and-style Pants shop was...>
Pants are important, eh gals?.

More importantly WHO bought the black suede boots? I went in yesterday to get them and they were gone.

My money's on Millie B) :) :)

Why, thank you, Sugar. They'll fit nicely into my Ace Frehley collection.

On the subject of underpants, I came across something that should send Westie into fits.
