Loadsa porters now outta work?

Here's a question though; is there a name for the noise a trolley case makes going down an urban pavement?

We all hear it a trillion times a week, it's become part of the sonic landscape.

Suggestions anyone?

The first word that came to my head was 'trundle'. I think that particular sound is the perfect representation of that word.

But the wheely case couldn't have put porters out of work, because the things we can do now with the wheelies are not things that were previously done by porters.

E.g. one has to spend a couple of days in London for work. One's meeting on the second day doesn't start until 1, but one has to check out of the hotel by 10am. What to do?

One gaily trips along the road with one's trundley, and spends a very pleasant morning in the rose garden in The Regent's Park.

Couldn't have done that in the days before trundlies. How did we manage? What would be have been doing in a similar situation?

Sam's song:

people that you meet, out on the street, are whistling "Sam's song"

why it makes you grin, gets under your skin, as only a song can do

Der Bingle........late forties or early fifties....ah think.

Usually leave bag with hotel porter & pick it up later.

But one's meeting is far away from the hotel, and after the meeting one wants to get straight to Euston to get to hell out of London and back to Scotland as fast as possible. So shonkin about all over the city - into the city for the meeting, back to the hotel for the case, back to the city for the train..... no way.

How did we do it before the trundlies??

If you are only there for one night pack small:

1. Dispense with nightie.

2. Paper pants

3. Lycra in your clothes or similar material that doesn't crush.

4. Stick them all in smart little wheelie case and 'trundle' along - (definitely a fine onomatopoeia)

Or take somebody strong and good-looking along with you.
