The revolving door was invented by the German Hans Linksgesteuert in 1885 for the entrance of the newly built Hamburg City Hall. The hall had been built at the end of a long avenue lined with large municipal buildings and because of the lay of the land it had the effect of tunnelling and magnifying the prevailing wind. The effect on the new building was to blast open the original conventional doors and basically freezing out the grand lobby in winter and scattering. Linksgesteuert's first attempt at solving this problem was to change the hinges around so that the doors opened outwards instead of inwards but there was a fatal flaw in this plan and it was down the the wind again. Anyone who wanted to go into the building couldn't because the force of the wind kept the doors slammed shut.

It was then that he hit on the idea of a revolving door. But there were teething troubles. The doors were designed to rotate either way but because some people naturally go clockwise and others go anti-clockwise. This caused confusion, anger, quite often stale-mate and, on many occasions, trapped occupants when neither wanted to give way to the other. A sort of circular push-of-war. In the end Hans stepped in to fix a sort of ratchet mechanism so the doors could only turn in one direction. It was his choice that the doors rotated clockwise. He was left-handed and as that is the outer hand on clockwise revolving doors the pusher has more leverage - there was still a bit of a wind resistance problem to be overcome as well.

Since then, in honour of the revolving door inventor, all doors are set to revolve clockwise.

From today's Column 8 Sydney Morning Herald

The revolving door debate is, fittingly, spiralling out of control. There is a general consensus among the readership that national standards of rotational direction are indeed determined by the side of the road on which citizens drive, rather than by hemisphere. We need data from Britain in order to confirm this, and we have as yet no reports from Singapore as to whether equatorial location has any bearing on the matter. In the meantime, we have a lengthy note from Peter Nation, of AGP Door Systems, outlining all sorts of fascinating facts about revolving doors in Australia. Quite apart from the savings of air-conditioning costs they bring by creating an effective airlock, it turns out that the maximum allowable speed for a revolving door in this country is 0.75 metres a second. Bet you didn't know that

Obama:-

I watched some of his "my fellow Americans", last night and I wid have been proud to vote for him. It is early days but he does seem capable.

Also noted the reception given to Bush, in Alberta....that was really a surprise, given that Alberta tends to vote right/right wing........

This young lassie needs tae win the last three matches tae have any chance of qualifying for a play-off spot. She has done quite well, especially for someone so young.

Column8 SMH

The revolving door/hemisphere discussion has, as we expected, taken a turn for the worse. Most readers assumed that northern hemisphere revolving doors followed the example set by driving on the wrong side of the road, and thus turn in the opposite direction to ours. We asked for confirmation from Britain - if their doors spun clockwise, then the driving thesis looked good. But sadly, British doors do not do this. "Just confirming that the revolving door at my local supermarket goes counter-clockwise," reports Lyndal Howe of Wakefield, West Yorkshire. We have further baffling data from South-East Asia, courtesy of John Sullivan, in Bangkok. "The revolving doors at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport rotate anti-clockwise. Being a northern hemisphere nation of left-side drivers, Thailand fits the theory that rotational direction of revolving doors is determined by hemisphere. Maybe the doors were imported from a nation of right-side drivers. I prefer to believe someone installed the doors upside down."
