Some have stated that this street scene might have been taken in Partick, any opinions?

And finally, good to see that you have kept your figure, Rolo: ;)

See the Partick street scene one? Awfy familiar....

I'm wondering if it was taken from under the railway bridge at Woolworths looking west?

There's still a wee narrow-fronted fruit and veg shop right there, seem to remember it had a canopy (rhymes with Obe Wan) years ago. Up the road a bit, just before where you'd turn right up Crow Rd, there was a fish shop that I also think had a canopy.

Also, if it IS that part of Dumbarton Rd, it'd make sense that on a summer's day the shadows would fall exactly where they do in the pic--- cos the sun would be between south-east and south-west.

<I'll get my cagoule>

Is the last one Buchanan St in the mid-late 70s? Looking up the hill the Concert Hall isnae there, that's cos it wasn't. The big tenement in the middle of the picture, is that the former George Hotel? If so, the building's still there with TopShop and Zavvi on its shopfronts.

Pee ess, I'd never huv walked hand in hand wi a bloke wi manboobs, even if he does look like Alan Rough after he retired....

Check out the other couple; was Liz Dawn outta Coronation St havin a secret affair wi' Jimmy Reid?

Know exactly where you mean - looks likely to me. There's not much else in terms of distinguishing features though. I dunno if a recent pic would help.

It sure is, I'm certain of it. Just about where Borders is now, or slightly before it. The 4 windowed building on the corner, to the right, is the och aye Scottish apparel shop (Pringles? James something...? ). And there's the columns at the entrance to what was the Pier, on the left past the Royal Bank.

But the big building at the back.... the George hotel?? Naw naw naw. Cannae be. That building is sited where the Galleries are now. The George is not really visible in this pic; it would be along the straight line of the buildings, up the road on the left. Whatever that big building was, it's long gone.

Nice Slacks! Note again the absence of fat tubbers.

I also love the light in the Botanics pic. Thanks for posting these HH.

If that is the case, what is the street running right to left in the background? The smart money has moved on to Maryhill Rd. or Cathcart Rd.

You are right, Westie, the George is now where the record shop is, next time you are passing that way, look above the shop entrance, the iron rings that once held the George's canopy in place are still visible.

Re the RCH, you are right again, it took the place of the building at the top of the photograph.

I think you're right Westtie, the angles just don't fit quite right, do they?

Me and Mr T took a break from the Xmas melee this avo in the John Lewis cafe, which has a brilliant view of the old George Hotel building across the road. It has a turret, which I think I can now just see in HH's pic, top left corner?

Glasgow's new N.A.A.F.I. building in Buchanan Street in 1953, to be converted into the Chevalier Casino in 1964. The sign for the George can be seen on the left foreground:

And again:

Looking down on Buchanan Street from the roof of the NAAFI building, 1953. The George is on the right:

Yikes! Here is an even better view from 1962 showing the NAFFI building & the rear of the George, complete with Rolo's 'turret' ( note Buchanan St. bus station behind the NAFFI building )

Wow!!!

Brilliant pics HH. I had never even heard of that NAAFI building, and certainly had never seen it before. Amazing!

.... peers.....

There's somethin ecclesiastical lookin to the right of the building in the 1962 view. Wonder what that was.

(....Is there a furniture shop near there that's housed in a converted church? Now painted white? )

I don't remember the building full-stop JJ. The only Chev I remember was in Hope St down opposite Central Station.

Dex's right about the McDonald furniture shop up top of pic. Still there today.

I've no memory at all of what the church building was opposite the NAAFI building. I'm guessing the rubble's under what's now Buchanan Galleries?
