How do you mean? The windows setup isn't the same in the two pics.

There are stone supports under the sill above Jessop's in the new pic that aren't there in the old pic.

Besides, tenements are sandstone with the brickwork visible, as in the new pic. The old pic isn't sandstone bricks.

Yes, I'd second thoughts about the supports so you may be right. It's also hard to tell what size the window is above the start of the Jessops sign.

I don't think the fact that you can't see the sandstone in the old photo is a giveaway, though. It looks like it has been painted (or some other coating). Might well have gone in the sandblasting epidemic.

Took a couple of shots to-day for heavy window comparison, I would rule out Jessops as the 'now' shot.

The corner has changed very little in 70 years, thought it is no longer Paisley's, which has removed to the other side of Jamaica St. Architecturally it remains the same group of buildings, they now belong to Sir Hugh Fraser, whose monogram appears on the sunblinds.

From oor Dexter who replied to my enquiry over on HG:

In 1931 the PO Directory Lists Paisley's as being in Jamaica Street and Broomielaw. It also lists The Argyle Rubber Company as being in Jamaica Street. No other branches are listed of either company. Certainly not in Byres Road. Circa 1960 The Argyle Rubber Comapny moved to Hurlet house in Nitshill and I think it is still there.

In the Kelly's Directories of 1930 and 1939 no mention is made of either company in their listings for Byres Road.

There is another pic of Paisleys on the Broomielaw clearly showing their logo on the Jamaica street side, this may be the one reflected in the 'Argyle Rubber' window. Looks like the VM got it wrong again. I do love these wee puzzles.

Final proof that it is Jamaica St. rather than Byres Rd. from Robert Pool over on HG:

The photo shows the rubber companys shop in Jamacia Street, not Byres Rd. Here is a photo of the shop premises as they were in 1931 (2 Shops) Conway Philips and Alexander Bennett.

Yep, the west end can be a nightmare for delivery drivers. A lot of homeowners insist on putting the 'posher' address on their orders, even though these addresses don't appear on street maps. I used to walk up Queen's Gate regularly. I thought it was the posh end of Hyndland Street. Obviously, the photographic evidence shows the old memory plays tricks
