Tartan Day Scotland

Photo: kilt. A Celebration of Scotland's people, heritage, culture and history. Tartan day is 6th April - in commemeration of the Declaration of Arbroath on April 6, 1320, which triggered the birth of democracy in Scotland.

Tartan Day began in 1998 when the US Senate designated 6 April to be a day each year when it was decided that Americans would celebrte "the monumental achievements and invaluable contributions made by Scottish Americans.". Events are held throughout North America and people throughout the world celebrate their affinity with Scotland. A major event takes place be in New York and that's where Alex Salmond, the First Minister will be heading to celebrate Tartan Day. Even the Tartan Army will be there.

However, we are catching up and from 29th March - April 6th there will be a week of special events - and people will celebrate Tartan Day both at home and abroad. Across Scotland a range of local celebrations will be taking place including: haggis hurling, ceilidhs and competitions to find the best new bands.
