Last October here in Scotland 88 events took place, involving 1056 musicians and entertaining thousands of people, all raising money to tackle poverty around the world. Well, for people who missed Oxjam last year, or loved it so much they want to take part again, they have another opportunity. Oxfam is calling on music fans to start planning now to make April the new month to make music, raise money and help Oxfam end poverty.
Oxjam is a festival with a difference: thousands of events put on by music lovers - from large-scale festivals to local sponsored busks. People with a range of musical tastes from folk to funk and rock to rave are all invited to join the festival and it doesn't need to be in a big venue. The beauty of Oxjam is that hundreds of small events held in perhaps a local pub or even a living room can make one huge party.
In October, stars such as Jarvis Cocker, Jamelia, Hot Chip, The Kooks and Fat Boy Slim took part, bringing the house down at a series of gigs held in a specially converted Oxfam Shop.
Joe Goddard from Hot Chip said:
"I spend most of my time doing trivial things in the name of pop music, so doing my bit for Oxjam is undeniably a good thing. We should all try to slip a few good things into our otherwise selfish lives, so please get involved with Oxjam in some way if you can."
Taking part in Oxjam can also be a platform to reach a wider audience. A number of musicians who performed last year filmed their act at an Oxjam show and uploaded their video to the MTV website. The best were put to a public vote and 'Taking Chase' from Edinburgh are now amongst the semi-finalists competing to appear in a special MTV studio show.
Xfm DJ John Kennedy said:
"Oxjam is a fantastic way for the stars of tomorrow to get themselves in the spotlight at the same time as doing their bit to fight poverty around the world."
Benny Littlejohn, Oxjam manager at Oxfam said:
"Oxjam is a great chance for musicians to get themselves exposure to bigger audiences as well as helping us to fight poverty. We'd love to see people in Scotland building on the success of October's events and put on some great shows this April."
Oxjam is a way to raise money for Oxfam's work to tackle poverty all over the world. Supporting Oxfam by holding or going to an Oxjam event in April helps people to earn a living, get an education, receive health care, grow more food and get fresh water. Every single pound raised counts so the effects of getting involved in this fun month of music are worldwide.
Jennifer Byrne, a University graduate organised an ambitious night of music for Oxjam last year:
"About 1,200 people turned up on the night - it was so exciting to see so many people. Loads of people came up to me and thanked me. My friends still talk about it now. I am very proud of the event I organised and believe Oxjam is an amazing concept. It is great way of getting people involved with charity at a young age and the events provide so much scope for originality and variety."
