The Hunterian Art Gallery, University of Glasgow, will be host to the only Scottish showing of this important exhibition of the work of one of the most successful British painters of the 19th century. The exhibition comes from the unrivalled collection at Leighton House Museum, London.

Painter and sculptor, Frederic, Lord Leighton (1830–1896), President of the Royal Academy, was one of the most successful British artists at the end of the nineteenth century. Following his death in 1896, his extraordinary studio-house became a museum, and the Leighton Drawings Collections was established with the support of the then Prince of Wales and numerous personalities from the worlds of art, literature and politics.

For Leighton, drawing was a pleasure and an essential professional tool. His drawings are among his most accomplished works. This is the first-ever exhibition devoted to this aspect of his career. Over 50 drawings will be on view, covering the full range of his career and showing the role drawing played for exhibition work and as preparatory studies for his major oils. The selected works richly displays the impressive technique of this remarkable draughtsman.

The exhibition and its accompanying publication are the outcome of the ambitious Leighton Drawings Project completed in 2006 with the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund. Additional information can be found at: www.rbkc.gov.uk/leightonhousemuseum/drawings
