"To see this pale, slightly built, vulnerable-looking, young man stand before one of the most venerable and venerated orchestras in the world - the Staatskapelle Dresden - cannot begin to prepare you for what follows. Out of apparent contradiction comes breathtaking accord." The Independent

Glasgow's International Classical Season 08-09 will come to a spectacular close on 16th June as one of Britain's brightest young conductors, Daniel Harding, leads one of the world's oldest and most distinguished orchestras, the Staatskapelle Dresden, in an all-Schumann programme at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. This concert is the only UK date of their forthcoming European tour, and also features French violinist Renaud Capucon, who will join Harding and the orchestra as guest soloist.

Founded by Prince Elector Moritz von Sachsen in 1548, the Staatskapelle Dresden has been a leading ensemble throughout various musical eras and is steeped in tradition. Over the past four and a half centuries, distinguished conductors have helped shape the development of this one-time court orchestra, including Heinrich Schuetz, Johann Adolf Hasse, Carl Maria von Weber and Richard Wagner. Last November a panel of leading international music critics voted the Staatskapelle Dresden as one of the world's 10 greatest orchestras in Gramophone magazine.

Aged only 33, British conductor Daniel Harding has already conducted some of the world's most prestigious orchestras. A protege of Simon Rattle and Claudio Abbado, he made his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic at the age of only 21, becoming the youngest person ever to conduct this world famous orchestra. In the same year, he became the youngest conductor to appear at the BBC Proms. He is the Principal Guest Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Principal Conductor of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. He is a regular visitor to the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Vienna Philharmonic (both of which he has conducted at the Salzburg Festival), the Berlin Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw and the Leipzig Gewandhaus. French violinist Renaud Capucon, who is renowned for his dynamism and virtuosity, joins Harding and the orchestra as guest soloist for the season finale.

The penultimate concert of Glasgow's current International Classical Season takes place tomorrow night at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, with Leif Ove Andsnes and the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra performing Grieg's magnificent Holberg Suite.
