GLASGOW is the focus for fair trade investment with two events in one day planned to show the city how it can help developing countries trade their way out of poverty.

The Scottish Fair Trade Forum's Coordinator Betsy Reed will speak at Shared Interest's Scottish leg of their UK tour at St Andrews in the Square on Tuesday 22nd April to spread the message of helping finance fair trade.

The world's only 100 per cent fair trade lender, Shared Interest is an international organisation with its head office in the North East of England. It currently has over 8,500 members and is seeking further investors to help develop its work in 41 of the world's poorest countries.

Shared Interest's managing director Patricia Alexander said: "We have had great support from Scotland over the years, totalling in just under half a million pounds of investment, and our lunchtime and evening events are partly to thank our current members for their continued support.

"But so that we can continue to help businesses in developing countries with the financial support and training they urgently need to survive, we also need further investment and would love to meet anyone interested in supporting fair trade."

Established in 1990, Shared Interest Society lends over £30 million from UK investors each year to businesses in developing countries, helping them sell their local produce and handcrafted goods in the fair trade market. Meanwhile, sister organisation the Shared Interest Foundation, delivers vital training to sustain their growth and survival in an increasingly commercial world.

Patricia will share some Shared Interest success stories at both the 12.30pm - 2.30pm and 6.30pm - 8.30pm events, along with answering any questions from existing and potential investors. This will be followed by refreshments and a chance to listen to Scotland's Fair Trade Nation's Betsy Reed on the impact the fair trade movement can have to poorer communities overseas.

Betsy said:

"I am delighted to be invited to speak at an event from an organisation that is clearly at the core of the fair trade movement.
"Shared Interest has already garnered strong support in Glasgow and it is a pleasure to be able to speak amongst people so committed to helping people trade their goods freely and fairly through ethical investment.
"As we work towards Scotland's becoming one of the first Fair Trade Nations in the world, it is important to support organisations like Shared Interest, who are absolutely committed to the fair trade message.
"We can all do something small to get involved. By learning more about the fair trade process, buying ethical alternatives to our usual supermarket products, or coming to free events like this one, we can all do our bit to help people in developing countries earn a decent wage and access the health care and education that are their basic human right."
