The Centre of New Enlightenment, Art Fund Prize
Art Fund Prize
The Centre of New Enlightenment (TCoNE) at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is one of four museums to be shortlisted for the prestigious Art Fund Prize. The award is for the most imaginative and original museum or gallery of the year and the winner will receive £100,000.
The Centre of New Enlightenment (TCoNE) at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is one of the UK's most exciting new experiences for young people. Opened in 2007, the centre provides a unique and inspirational educational visit for 10-14 year olds visiting in groups of up to 32.
Drawing inspiration from the Scottish Enlightenment philosophers and innovators who questioned their situation and challenged the status quo, The TCoNE programme at Kelvingrove is designed to inspire young people to believe that they are not victims of circumstance, but architects of their own futures. It is designed to encourage and inspire young people to engage in the world around them.
From the mysterious Central Technical Area the young people are briefed and issued with specialist equipment. Their equipment issues challenges and, in pairs, they are sent on a thrilling and mysterious quest through the museum to explore the galleries, solve clues, complete challenges and collecting data. As part of the programme they learn about the museum, the world around them - but also themselves.
John MacBeath, Professor Emeritus University of Cambridge said
'The Centre of New Enlightenment is one of the most imaginative and powerful approaches I have met in 30 years of evaluating learning sites and learning opportunities for young people. From the moment they enter the door young people are engaged and, as our study shows, carry away with them a new found sense of self belief.'
You can vote for who you would like to win in this, the People's Choice Poll. The winner will count as one vote at the final judges' meeting.
Competition is fierce and TCoNE really needs your votes!
The online poll closes on the 11th June and the winner will be announced on the 18th June.
