You may not know that Glasgow, our Dear Green Place, has special links with St Valentine, as part of his remains have been laid to rest in Blessed John Duns Scotus Church in the Gorbals. For those of you interested in 'the past' a walk round the Gorbals could prove more interesting than you might think.(Read what Ian Mitchell has to say about the area

Photo: Necklace by Judith. If your intention is to really splash out on some exquisite mementoes then Judith Kenny Jewellery does an excellent line in designer jewellery to suit both men and women. I particularly love her unusual necklaces and a silver ring with a stylised copper heart - very different, desirable and tres, tres chic. When I popped in for a scout around, Judith reminded me that there is still time to order specially designed commissioned one offs. Do you know someone that special?

Should you be short on inspiration your creative skills could be spurred on by a visit to Glasgow University Valentine Gallery, which it absolutely fascinating. Some of the content from days gone bye still seems pretty apt - in particular the poem: “To the Boy Friend”, Glasgow University Magazine, Vol 43 (1931-1932), will make you laugh.

Apart from being an excellent online source of information the University of Glasgow is a very romantic place to visit. It's Gothic towers and cloisters are perfect for strolling hand in hand and it also houses the world's largest collection of work by Charles Rennie Mackintosh - the acclaimed Scottish architect. Much of this is housed in a detailed re-creation of Mackintosh's former home at 78 Southpark Avenue. In the words of my enthusiastic partner Jim Byrne: 'This is a 'must see' for any visitor - the furniture, the colours, the shapes and designs are seen at their best in this setting'.

This fantastic collection of Mackintosh's work is contained within The Hunterian Gallery, where you can find some glorious work by the Colourists including Cadell and Fergusson. It also has Europe's largest display of work by the American artist James McNeill Whistler

So, young (and old) lovers wherever you are rest assured that Glasgow, and the West End, holds many attractions for the celebration of romance, budding or otherwise. 'Valentine's Day is "not just about romantic love, but love for your fellow human being...The people of Glasgow have big hearts and love which is unbounded,"
(Neil Baxter, The Scotsman,)
Irresistible!!!
