The Argyll Hotel is just the sort of place you would like to know was waiting for you to relax after a day out in Glasgow, whether you've shopped till you dropped or have been out lapping up the culture that the city has to offer. It's a cosy and cheerful place and very welcoming with a real Scottish flavour - lots of tartan, paintings of Highlanders (The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders to be exact) and even its own Traditional Scottish restaurant.

A winning combination for tourists coming to Scotland, which no doubt explains why the hotel is so attractive to visitors. However, there can be little doubt that much of the success that they enjoy can be accounted for by the approach of the professional team, who run the hotel under Alice Gilmore's inspired and experienced eye. I was fascinated to hear that she actually travelled to meet the regiment and consult with them when she had the idea of calling the restaurant 'Sutherland's'. Thus apart from making choices from such traditional fare as 'Cock-a-Leekie Soup', 'Baked Loch Fyne Kipper', 'Poach Fillet of Tay Salmon with west coast prawn and dill cream sauce', or 'Grilled Islay Langousitnes with West Coast Clams and Mussels' - when dining in the restaurant you can also learn a bit about the history of the 'Argylls'.

The Kelvin Hall and Glasgow University The hotel is situated in a very convenient spot on Glasgow's famous Sauchiehall Street near Kelvingrove, handy for Glasgow's West End, with its many cultural attractions, including the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, the nearby Kelvin Hall Sports Arena, Glasgow University and The Hunterian Museum and Art Galleries plus restaurants, pubs, cafes and shops galore. It is conveniently located nearby the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre. The centre of Glasgow is only a step away - with all the attractions of a modern, vibrant city including great theatres, clubs, conferences, sporting events and world class shopping.

They have been particularly enterprising with regard to taking the stress out of organising short breaks. They have formed a partnership with Intermezzo Promotions to offer Art, Opera and Theatre Breaks . For example you can enjoy a one or two night stay at the hotel and take in a show at the nearby King's Theatre. An unusual treat lies in store with their Mackintosh in Style Week-ends where an inclusive package allows you to 'explore the genius of Charles Rennie Mackintosh' - Glasgow's most renowned architect. Teeming up with The Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society, you can take up a unique opportunity to visit some of Glasgow's wonderful Mackintosh buildings and stay in comfort at the Argyll Hotel. This imaginative venture placed the Hotel as a Finalist in the Scottish Thistle Awards 2003.

Photo: reception. There is a very relaxed and homely atmosphere at the Hotel and a range of options are available. Surprisingly, there are 38 rooms and you can opt for a double room, a family room or if you are feeling a romantic they have a lovely room with a Four Poster. All are spacious , sparklingly clean and have ensuite bathrooms. Breakfast is served in Sutherland's restaurant, which 'captures a bygone era steeped in Scottish history, and you can choose to dine there for lunch or dinner. Private Dining is also available for companies or parties.

The Argyll Hotel offers a similar high quality service and affordable prices at its sister establishments The Angus Hotel B& B and Allison Executive Lets four star executive self-catering apartments.
