The Rape of Recy Taylor, GFT
2 – 7 June, 2018
Glasgow Film Theatre, 12 Rose St G3 6RB
Recy Taylor, a 24-year-old black mother and sharecropper, was gang raped by six white boys in 1944 Alabama. Such an occurrence was common in Jim Crow South, and few women spoke up in fear for their lives. But Recy Taylor bravely identified her rapists, and the NAACP sent its chief rape investigator Rosa Parks, who rallied support and triggered an unprecedented outcry for justice. The Rape of Recy Taylor exposes a legacy of physical abuse of black women and reveals Rosa Parks’ intimate role in Recy Taylor’s story.
