A major police investigation was underway today after a body was found in the River Kelvin at Kelvinbridge shortly after 7am.

Several police and other emergency services vehicles converged on the area after the alert was sounded by a passer-by, and the body was removed from the river by police divers around an hour later.

Officers conducted forensic tests at the scene, and a section of the road was cordoned off.

A post mortem is currently being carried out in a bid to discover the victim's identity and the cause of death.

The incident sparked rush hour chaos along the length of Great Western Road, with traffic heading for the city centre snagged all the way back to Anniesland.
