Dany Metzein and her staff are celebrating the 30th anniversary of Strawberry Fields - the fabulous children's clothes shop at 517 Great Western Road, (0141 339 1121) where you will find one of the most wonderful display of childrens' wear in Glasgow.
Since Dany set up the shop in 1978, when her own three children were just little, she has built a reputation for style and chic for kids. Her French heritage and her love of fashion is illustrated in Strawberrry Field's range of cute, quirky and fashionable clothes for all occasions.
Dany called upon the talents of her husband, the distinguished architect, Isi Metzstein and her friend Rita McGurn, film and theatre designer, to design and create the shop's attractive interior - with a lot of help from family and friends. The name was inspired by the Beatles' song and an Austrian artist thought up the logo. Dany's mum, who trained in Vienna and Paris, and worked all her life in the 'manufacture of beautiful garments, designed and made clothes for her daughter's venture. She was also indispensible in helping take care of her grandchildren.
French inspired design was very evident with Breton sweaters, black polo necks and berets, black tights and clogs. This was a first for Glasgow and many of these styles continue to sell well today.
Apart from these eternally popular items Dany keeps up to date with what's in fashion and remembers all the different styles that she has sold throughout the history of Strawberry Fields including:
rara skirts, reversible body warmers, cord dungarees, Adam Ant pirate styls, spots, checks, stripes and flowers.
Dany still keeps firmly abreast of, or ahead of fashion, sourcing her stock from a wide range of high quality designers including:
Taki-to
- D & G
- DKNY

and Burberry
Parents who shopped for their own kids now come along to Stawberry Fields with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Particularly if there is a special occasion on the calendar - a party to go to, a birthday treat or when just looking for a lovely little outfit. They have fond memories of the Alice Byrne artwork on the wall - dungarees in the shape of a frog and the wooden castle and chest painted by another westender, Anne Nicholson.
