Photo: rinse fm tour. Rinse FM 2012 Tour: Zinc, Plastician and P Money

Saturday, February 18, 2012

11:00pm until 3:00am

For the first time ever, London's foremost dubstep and grime station Rinse FM is going on tour with some of their favourite acts of the moment. Ending with a massive blow out rave at London’s notorious Fabric, the Rinse team will be calling in at the Arches with possibly the finest line-up of the tour: current headliner of the UK scene Zinc, the much-hyped grime newcomer MC P Money and Rinse FM regular party starters Plastician, Brackles and Elijah & Skilliam.

Originally London's biggest pirate radio station, Rinse FM is without doubt the UK's most respected place for grime, dubstep, UK garage, UK funky and drum and bass - the first to provide exposure for the likes of Dizzee Rascal and Wiley, and home to DJs from Skream and Redlight to Kode9 and Plastician.

Glasgow Music and Film Fest: Silver Apples at Mono

The forefathers of electronic rock as we know it...

Formed in 1967, Silver Apples made unprecedented sounds. Originally part of a rock band, the group soon reduced to Danny Taylor and Simeon Coxe III after the latter’s obsession with oscillators effectively pushed the other members off stage......

After much recuperation after an accident 2007 marked the return of Simeon, one of music’s most enigmatic characters, delighting fans by reappearing behind his army of oscillators at select festivals across the world.

Needless to say, we’re delighted to have the master himself here as part of the GMFF for a rare gig.

The Arches

Wednesday, February 29, 2012

7:30pm until 11:00pm

One of the key faces in the post-millennial spoken word scene, vocalist and rapper Scroobius Pip first came to public attention with Thou Shalt Always Kill, the first single from his chart-bothering collaboration with producer dan le sac.

Angry yet wry, sharp yet contemplative, his lyrics are a provocative snapshot of the state of the nation as it stands – and an example of the diverse creativity stemming from the growing cultural unease and political disaffection of the past ten years.

Support comes from performance artist and MC B.Dolan, following one of his infamously energetic, genre-straddling live shows at the Arches last year.

Mary Jean Lewis

Saturday 3rd of March

Woodend Bowling and Tennis Club

Mary Jean Lewis (niece of Jerry Lee Lewis) with her Low Men and Des Horsfall and Andy McKerlie Doors 8.00 - £10

Mary Jean Lewis is part of a musical legacy that started back in the fifties with her uncle, Jerry Lee. She's a dynamic personality and performer exuding all the charm you would expect from a Louisiana woman. She draws on a range of country, blues, and rock n roll to create her own soulful style based on her powerful voice and intimate connection with the lyrics.

Mary Jean Lewis with her band, the Low Men are making quite a name for themselves on the Roots music scene playing a mixture of country, pop, rockabilly and rock n roll. This night in March promises to be an intimate occasion as she takes us on a journey through American roots music accompanied by Martin Barrett (guitar), JT Davidson (pedal steel) and Sy McBain (doghouse bass).

Also playing this night is Des Horsfall and Andy McKerlie.

Once again Glasgow plays host to all the musicians, singers, dancers and many friends of the late Jimmy Mc Hugh who converge on his adopted city from all over the world for a great weekend of music in his memory. In this the 13th Concert for Jimmy it is extremely heart-warming to see that the 'Concert Weekend', as it has come to be known as, continues to show the love, warmth and great music which Jimmy so proudly promoted throughout his life. . Over the years since Jimmy’s passing in 1999 many, many musicians and singers have come to Glasgow to commemorate Jimmy's memory, and it is truly wonderful that we are all together again for another year. Some of the participating musicians and singers performing at this year's Concert are well known to many audiences throughout the world, many of whom will be experiencing the 'Concert Weekend' for the first time. We are sure that you will enjoy the tremendous standard of music on show and that you will welcome the musicians with your customary warmth and friendship. Jimmy came to Glasgow in 1946 and remained here for the rest of his life making Glasgow his home. Jimmy became one of the finest fiddlers of his generation, an accomplished five row accordion player, teacher and composer of renown. Jimmy brought up a whole generation of people not only playing music but sharing his vast knowledge and love for all types of music especially Irish and Scottish traditional. Many musicians playing today owe a huge gratitude to Jimmy for his teaching and promotion of music. To all the musicians, friends, concert patrons and family members too numerous to mention, we say a huge and warm thanks for supporting the concert and making it the tremendous success it has become. The Concert M.C. is once again Jimmy’s great friend and singer Arthur Johnstone and will also be enhanced with Ann Mc Hugh’s dancers the Shamrock Academy. Ann also continues in her role as worldwide president of the Irish Dance Organisation, An Comhdhail na Muinteoiri le Rinci Gaelacha, the first person outside Ireland to receive this honour, many congratulations to Ann Mc Hugh! A special thanks to our friends in the organising of this concert, namely John Gahagan, Martin Hughes and Alan O’ Leary and our sponsors including the staff at Jury’s Inn, Sharkey’s Bar and Pro Sound Services. “The Seedboat sails from Barra shore, young Donald’s gone to Newry And though he swears a swift return, ‘til then she’ll miss him dearly..” These lines are from a beautiful bitter-sweet love song that has inspired two musicians from either end of The Seedboat’s voyage to embark on an exciting new journey of music and song. The song is one of the great treasures of the Scottish Gaelic tradition and now, some two centuries after it first saw light of day, it sails again as Maggie MacInnes and Colum Sands invite you to find a seat amidst the cargo of clàrsach, guitar and a bi-lingual blend of songs old and new celebrating the musical bridges between Ireland and Scotland.

The workshops, which are open to people of all ages and abilities, are being held by the Glasgow Fiddle Workshop at 3pm on Saturday 20th June at Hillhead Library on Byres Road. Gillian Frame, development officer for GFW and a former Young Scottish Traditional Musician of the Year, said it would be an ideal introduction for anybody even slightly interested in learning to play. She said: "We provide the instruments, you don't need any experience - so all you have to do is turn up. We’ve hosted a number of these workshops at the yearly traditional music festival Celtic Connections and they’re always hugely popular." Along with fiddle and guitar the workshops will also include ukulele, bodhran and tin whistle. GFW, which also runs traditional music classes at Stow College, will hold a free concert at 2pm at Hillhead Library before the workshops and urges anyone who is interested to come along early. Hi Stevie, Below is a brief write up and the details of the pieces as you requested. I also enclosed a panorama of our wall and the scroll with the names of everyone involved. Hope its what you had in mind! If you want someone to talk about the Glasgow wall, let me know and I'll put you in touch with Gary. -Adam INTRO "The Kelvingrove Jam took place over the Saturday the 8th and and Sunday the 9th of April 2006. I had recieved an email from Scott Cooper of Commodore Homes in late 2005 explaining that he had some hoardings on one of his sites that kept getting tagged. After alot of phonecalls, dozens of emails and hundreds of text messages later I arrived in Glasgow with the artist DAIS to see the site, select colours of paint and meet the people I'd been talking to on the phone for the last four months! The rest is history, but I will say this- this was a very important event on many levels, mainly because it raised the profile of graffiti in Glasgow (apparently more building contractors in the area are already interested in having their hoardings painted) after a certain newspaper had tried to demonise the sale of a certain spray paint to "neds" (note- the last eight years have seen a huge amount of new spray paint companies emerge globally, and some sponsor very high profile artists). It also brought together artists from London and Glasgow, something that seldom happens, to work on one project together. It was important for DMT as a company because it was the first event of this scale that I designed and project managed, although I must thank GAZMAC at this point for all of his help without which I don't think the event would have run so smoothly. But lastly on a personal level, it was a great pleasure to meet and work with such a nice bunch of people, and I know that everyone who came from London felt exactly the same." THE WALL "Because we were in London and the rest of the artists were in Glasgow, we concentrated on designing our wall which was 20 m in length by 2.4 metres high. I produced a scale drawing and everyone added their sketches. What I liked straight away was the variety of individual styles and interpretations of the theme which, by the way, was MUSIC as Kelvingrove church was formally a recording studio. First off we had TIZER, who dropped the most contraversial piece of the weekend. He painted Sirens (naked sirens, that was the controversy) singing a ship of Vikings to their doom. The Siren's songs were painted as skulls and the Vikings on the ship spell out his name. Next to him was SHUCKS who, although being a member of Zulu Nation and a long-term Hip Hop fanatic, went for a heavy metal style piece, with Gothic lettering and a dragon-scaled colour scheme. His piece was also washed into the rocks, presumably by those naked sirens. Up top was STICKA, the youngest member of our "band", who painted a new-school style of graffiti that he only described as "electro". PREF's IDIOTS piece was inspired by punk rock typography and I think broke up the wall nicely. Also, if you look at the 3D in his piece, you can see his name, "PREF". Clever eh?. HEMP painted things from his formative years- "It's Rock n Roll meets Dance music in the style of Skateboard art. All the things that inspired me as a teenager, and that still inspire me to this day." PON's piece flowed nicely with HEMP's as he painted a big electric guitar with his "wildstyle" piece on the base of the instrument. DAIS, being the most technical piece, was the "engineer" of this whole production. Therefore he painted his letters to look like the sliders on a mixing desk. He also painted the portrait of Dizzy Gillespie, taking us through Rock and Dance to Jazz and Blues. Finally TORS' piece topped it all off nicely with an original style that was heavily influenced by old-school NYC graffiti. If SHUCKS was heavy metal, then TORS was definately hip hop! To finish the wall, TIZER and SHUCKS painted a nice scroll with all the shouts to everyone involved, so take a look at that as I don't want to miss anyone out, besides you all know who you are! Peace to all involved, hope this was the first of many. Adam at DMT"

GLASGOW IMPLODES 2005 Stereo, Kelvinhaugh Street // Sunday 23rd October 2005 // £5 all day ticket An all-dayer of some of the UK's most forward-thinking experimental talent: MARZURAAN - All-out drone rock, psychedelic yet powerfully structured; as if Earth were around in the early days of SST UTER - Amazing resonating electronic music, bringing to mind everyone from Kraftwerk to New Order to My Bloody Valentine, while never sounding like any of them. Essential live listening! THE LOW MIFFS - Hard-gigging youngsters from Glasgow, taking the post-punk template and blowing it away entirely. Destined for great things, live shows are legendary! BLACK SUN - Now a full band; slow, knuckle-dragging sludge with an experimental edge. In a field of their own: you won't like it. KYLIE MINOISE - One-man noise attack aktion. Performances usually last around 5 minutes ending with smashed microphones, bruised body parts and shredded vocal chords. CULVER - "a one-man juggernaut of drone, reverb and fuzz". Possibly the best proponent of minimalist drone around today; genius experiments into pitch and tone. ACID IS GROOVY KILL THE PIGS - Eerie dirge trio creating ominous and unsettled atmospheres. Could soundtrack your funeral! ROMANCE - One-man harsh, harsh noise. Expect to be unrelentlessly pummeled into submission and then spend the next few hours wondering what planet you're on. Earplugs essential. NOMA - Static, drone and feedback utilising household objects as a small orchestra. Sometimes meditative, sometimes evil! CHILDREN - Off-kilter, unpredictable looping rhythms offset by female spoken word. Dynamic and challenging. NACKT INSECTEN - Nasty feedback drone project with slowly shifting walls of mesmerizing texture and tone. TETSUO - Minimalist improv; rhythmic backbone with wordless vocals. Like King Crimson being covered by Burzum, without bass, guitar, or someone who knows how to sing. THE WHISKY WORKS - New young Glasgow band playing emotive post-hardcore in the style of mid-period Touch And Go Records. Bring to mind Virginia legends Kepone.

just a wee word again about elboroom on argyle street, happened in a few sats ago and was quite impressed with the dj-line up, Jim Hutchison, Crae Caldwell from Radio Magnetic, Brian Murnin, and Alex Smoke from soma. A little heavy for my tastes, in a bar anyway, but a good night was had by all. Too much for every week, but apparently its a monthly thang.

Just thought I'd mention that the new Elboroom on Argyle st, finnieston has started doing a wee acoustic night every Wednesday, as I happened to be in there last week and it was quite a good laugh. Still in it's early days so you can forgive the dodgy sound a bit but hopefully it'll get better. Postman Pat was a highlight!
