LEARN AN INSTRUMENT FOR FREE! BUDDING musicians in Glasgow are being given the chance to learn to play an instrument - for free. Several top Scottish musicians will host the "Come and Try" workshops on various instruments such as the guitar and fiddle as part of this year's West End Festival. The workshops, which are open to people of all ages and abilities, are being held by the Glasgow Fiddle Workshop at 3pm on Saturday 20th June at Hillhead Library on Byres Road. Gillian Frame, development officer for GFW and a former Young Scottish Traditional Musician of the Year, said it would be an ideal introduction for anybody even slightly interested in learning to play. She said: "We provide the instruments, you don't need any experience - so all you have to do is turn up. We’ve hosted a number of these workshops at the yearly traditional music festival Celtic Connections and they’re always hugely popular." Along with fiddle and guitar the workshops will also include ukulele, bodhran and tin whistle. GFW, which also runs traditional music classes at Stow College, will hold a free concert at 2pm at Hillhead Library before the workshops and urges anyone who is interested to come along early. Over the past months, we have had numerous requests from U.K. fans asking for a London gig. So we are very happy to announce that Robert Gordon and Chris Spedding will be performing a one-off gig at the Lady Luck Club in Soho / London on Monday, November 6th. This will be their first reunion gig in the U.K., and in fact their first London show together since October 1991! The band is very excited at the prospect of performing in London again, and are 'willing & ready' to deliver a dynamite show for the U.K. fans. Be sure to reserve your tickets soon, because this is going to be a concert that you don't want to miss! For more info, please e-mail: no9rockin@yahoo.com

Early Hours Sessions | Fri May 19 2006

Hi Stevie, Below is a brief write up and the details of the pieces as you requested. I also enclosed a panorama of our wall and the scroll with the names of everyone involved. Hope its what you had in mind! If you want someone to talk about the Glasgow wall, let me know and I'll put you in touch with Gary. -Adam INTRO "The Kelvingrove Jam took place over the Saturday the 8th and and Sunday the 9th of April 2006. I had recieved an email from Scott Cooper of Commodore Homes in late 2005 explaining that he had some hoardings on one of his sites that kept getting tagged. After alot of phonecalls, dozens of emails and hundreds of text messages later I arrived in Glasgow with the artist DAIS to see the site, select colours of paint and meet the people I'd been talking to on the phone for the last four months! The rest is history, but I will say this- this was a very important event on many levels, mainly because it raised the profile of graffiti in Glasgow (apparently more building contractors in the area are already interested in having their hoardings painted) after a certain newspaper had tried to demonise the sale of a certain spray paint to "neds" (note- the last eight years have seen a huge amount of new spray paint companies emerge globally, and some sponsor very high profile artists). It also brought together artists from London and Glasgow, something that seldom happens, to work on one project together. It was important for DMT as a company because it was the first event of this scale that I designed and project managed, although I must thank GAZMAC at this point for all of his help without which I don't think the event would have run so smoothly. But lastly on a personal level, it was a great pleasure to meet and work with such a nice bunch of people, and I know that everyone who came from London felt exactly the same." THE WALL "Because we were in London and the rest of the artists were in Glasgow, we concentrated on designing our wall which was 20 m in length by 2.4 metres high. I produced a scale drawing and everyone added their sketches. What I liked straight away was the variety of individual styles and interpretations of the theme which, by the way, was MUSIC as Kelvingrove church was formally a recording studio. First off we had TIZER, who dropped the most contraversial piece of the weekend. He painted Sirens (naked sirens, that was the controversy) singing a ship of Vikings to their doom. The Siren's songs were painted as skulls and the Vikings on the ship spell out his name. Next to him was SHUCKS who, although being a member of Zulu Nation and a long-term Hip Hop fanatic, went for a heavy metal style piece, with Gothic lettering and a dragon-scaled colour scheme. His piece was also washed into the rocks, presumably by those naked sirens. Up top was STICKA, the youngest member of our "band", who painted a new-school style of graffiti that he only described as "electro". PREF's IDIOTS piece was inspired by punk rock typography and I think broke up the wall nicely. Also, if you look at the 3D in his piece, you can see his name, "PREF". Clever eh?. HEMP painted things from his formative years- "It's Rock n Roll meets Dance music in the style of Skateboard art. All the things that inspired me as a teenager, and that still inspire me to this day." PON's piece flowed nicely with HEMP's as he painted a big electric guitar with his "wildstyle" piece on the base of the instrument. DAIS, being the most technical piece, was the "engineer" of this whole production. Therefore he painted his letters to look like the sliders on a mixing desk. He also painted the portrait of Dizzy Gillespie, taking us through Rock and Dance to Jazz and Blues. Finally TORS' piece topped it all off nicely with an original style that was heavily influenced by old-school NYC graffiti. If SHUCKS was heavy metal, then TORS was definately hip hop! To finish the wall, TIZER and SHUCKS painted a nice scroll with all the shouts to everyone involved, so take a look at that as I don't want to miss anyone out, besides you all know who you are! Peace to all involved, hope this was the first of many. Adam at DMT"

ive just had teh privelege of experiencing what i could ony describe as glasgows well kept secret. i happened to stumble across a little bar in north st called repertoire.for those of us who now and again want to relax in what could only be described as a traditional bar ( although classy) without the usual idiots that frequent popular haunts and ruin a relaxing night out then i suggest try it. i loved it.

GLASGOW IMPLODES 2005 Stereo, Kelvinhaugh Street // Sunday 23rd October 2005 // £5 all day ticket An all-dayer of some of the UK's most forward-thinking experimental talent: MARZURAAN - All-out drone rock, psychedelic yet powerfully structured; as if Earth were around in the early days of SST UTER - Amazing resonating electronic music, bringing to mind everyone from Kraftwerk to New Order to My Bloody Valentine, while never sounding like any of them. Essential live listening! THE LOW MIFFS - Hard-gigging youngsters from Glasgow, taking the post-punk template and blowing it away entirely. Destined for great things, live shows are legendary! BLACK SUN - Now a full band; slow, knuckle-dragging sludge with an experimental edge. In a field of their own: you won't like it. KYLIE MINOISE - One-man noise attack aktion. Performances usually last around 5 minutes ending with smashed microphones, bruised body parts and shredded vocal chords. CULVER - "a one-man juggernaut of drone, reverb and fuzz". Possibly the best proponent of minimalist drone around today; genius experiments into pitch and tone. ACID IS GROOVY KILL THE PIGS - Eerie dirge trio creating ominous and unsettled atmospheres. Could soundtrack your funeral! ROMANCE - One-man harsh, harsh noise. Expect to be unrelentlessly pummeled into submission and then spend the next few hours wondering what planet you're on. Earplugs essential. NOMA - Static, drone and feedback utilising household objects as a small orchestra. Sometimes meditative, sometimes evil! CHILDREN - Off-kilter, unpredictable looping rhythms offset by female spoken word. Dynamic and challenging. NACKT INSECTEN - Nasty feedback drone project with slowly shifting walls of mesmerizing texture and tone. TETSUO - Minimalist improv; rhythmic backbone with wordless vocals. Like King Crimson being covered by Burzum, without bass, guitar, or someone who knows how to sing. THE WHISKY WORKS - New young Glasgow band playing emotive post-hardcore in the style of mid-period Touch And Go Records. Bring to mind Virginia legends Kepone.

just a wee word again about elboroom on argyle street, happened in a few sats ago and was quite impressed with the dj-line up, Jim Hutchison, Crae Caldwell from Radio Magnetic, Brian Murnin, and Alex Smoke from soma. A little heavy for my tastes, in a bar anyway, but a good night was had by all. Too much for every week, but apparently its a monthly thang.

jamie | Sat Feb 12 2005

Just thought I'd mention that the new Elboroom on Argyle st, finnieston has started doing a wee acoustic night every Wednesday, as I happened to be in there last week and it was quite a good laugh. Still in it's early days so you can forgive the dodgy sound a bit but hopefully it'll get better. Postman Pat was a highlight!
