Connecting Continents and Remembering George Lyle

Info at http://glasgowimprovisersorchestra.com/giofest-ix/

GIOfest IX invites guests from all around the globe – bringing new projects, new approaches to music and new technologies, including works exclusively designed for GIO. In terms of our geographical range of guests, this is our most ambitious festival yet with artists from North America, Australia and around Europe.

Highlights include Anne Pajunen (composer, singer, viola player & founder and artistic director of Swedish Modern Opera Ensemble), the Canadian electronic music and visual artists Instant Places, the ebullient multi-instrumentalist Javier Paxarino from Madrid, Adriana Minu (Bucharest) and Pawel Kudel (Poland) with award-winning graphic scoring technology, and Alister Spence from Sydney, who will bring a new large work for GIO to premiere – Imagine Meeting You Here.

We are also delighted to welcome back our ‘extended family’ members Maggie Nicols and Corey Mwamba

George Lyle

There will be an exhibition of photographs curated by photographer John Gilmour, featuring GIO’s wonderful bassist, George Lyle who died earlier this year. Stewart Smith has written a heartfelt article on George in The Wire.

GIO Children’s Workshop

Our Saturday public events will include a children’s workshop hosted by GIO with Adriana Minu, who will introduce a brand new interactive graphic/visual score, suitable for age 4 and over

Open Workshop with Anne Pajunen

The Saturday Open Workshop will be delivered by Anne Pajunen, who will focus on the voice and welcome the addition of any instruments you wish to bring along

Concurrent Workshop and Discussion

There will also be an open session hosted by the Edinburgh College of Art research network Concurrent which explores interdisciplinary improvising through research and practice. The session involves a presentation, discussion and open performance with musicians and dancers. Chaired by Corey Mwamba.
